I will need a basic standard service soon and due to a drastic lack of funds I thought I would do it myself this year

It had its 5k service lovingly and meticulously carried out by Tubbs (inc all new bearings for wheels and tensioner wheel) but now its got 6k + change on the clock (in 4 years :oooops: ) I thought I would give it a standard service, but want to check the following list so I dont miss anything ..

Oil change
Gearbox oil change
Clutch cable adjustment
TPS reset (I have no idea how to do that)
New plugs.. ?? (what make/spec.. ?)
Empty catch can and clean filter
A spot of gear box oil in my gearbox nipple
Filter clean (with what .. ? - I have the blue pro race one)
Brake check (strip and clean callipers .. ?)
Tyre pressure check (36 rear and 34 front usually feels about right)
Check the suspension settings (for my weight)

Anything else I need to do ... ? Also is there anything on there that isn't really necessary .. ?

:)

Might be worth checking out the primary chain tension. The chain has probably bedded itself into the tensioner by now and I'm sure it was sorted by Tubbs - in that case, it's still probably ok but it's worth a look.

The info you need for setting your primary chain tension is in your handbook Ash.
As you are doing it yourself, why not go the whole hog and grease all your pivot points, spindles etc.

Thanks Don, You can strictly supervise but I want to at least have a go or I wont learn anything. You know I am a complete novice with the spanners but I should really learn the basics at least :oooops:

I forgot oil filter off the list and just received a stern talking to by Don on the phone :oooops: :oooops:

Can someone recommend the correct spec plugs please (make/type) .. ? not really bothered about the posh iridium ones, the standard spec ones will do fine :)

According to my handbook they are a 10R12A with a 0.89 gap (what ever that means) I take it that is ok? (cant find any on Ebay)

Well said. Now then young Ash.

You will need two 18" Stilsons. A smallish lump hammer and one of WB's grinders. :coat:

Service manual, molegrips and a hammer. And plenty of installation fluid, preferably of the bitter type, CAMRA-approved.

Plugs are HD standard, your number is correct.

However, with only 6k miles on them, there may be no reason to swap out the old ones, as long as they are "healthy" and properly gapped. Here is a photo chart that shows nicely the difference between healthy and not, and when they show excessive wear.

Tubbs will have changed the plugs at 5K, so they'll be OK, he'll also have serviced the air filter.

Clutch adjustment is done at the release bearing.

No need to strip/clean calipers.

Use LM grease for the output nipple.

If you're still running the Conti R/Attacks, pressures are 36 F and 42 R.

Hey Ash, even a stupid female like me can do a TPS reset. If I can do that, then you can do the whole service, dance a jig and juggle 6 balls at the same time.... lOl lOl lOl
