So, has anybody come up with a solution to the 1125s' instrument cluster misting up ?

After nearly 3 years mine is now getting really bad - the inside of the window now has a permanant water mark and when it mists up it is now obscuring the speed readout. HD in their infinite wisdom said that it was acceptable when I tried to put a claim in whilst it was still under warranty and there seems little point in replacing it anyway as the problem was never addressed - my 2010 CR mists up just as badly as my 2008 R !

Anybody tried pulling their IC apart - is it posssible and is there any way to seal it ?

Can a used one be fitted as a replacement ?

Anybody ever fitted an alternative speedo ?

Don't suppose anybody has an old faulty one they want to part with for me to pull apart ?

I had mine changed for an '09 unit under Warranty after I was told that it was only usually replaced on glass HD units because, wait for it, glass was 'colder' than the plastic that Buell use. Now, I've only got Physics 'O' level but had to correct this genius  lOl

Is sealing the unit any better than properly 'venting' it so the printed circuits don't permanently stew in a tropical fugg; I don't know. You could try parking it up with a sachet of silica gel sitting under the IC. Don't bother collecting them out of old shoe boxes, instead, next time you see a BT van, blag a sack of the sachets from the driver and buy him a drink lOl Apparently they use them for stuffing inside the phone line boxes you see by the side of the road ;)

Adam, tried that but it made no difference - the silica gel probably couldn't cope with the damp in my garage ! That probably makes my problem worse as my garage is built into the side of a hill - if it rains heavily then water seeps through the walls, not really possible to tank it from the outside - may have to consider getting it sealed internally, although it wll be an expensive solution !

What about using an oil-filled radiator on low, just to keep the temps above freezing and humidity down a bit?? That's what we use in our bike shed. May cost a bit, but surely better than the damp problem??

Sporster_Mann - my 09 IC was replaced under warranty for condensation and the cold weather erroneous low fuel and CEL light issue.

This seems to haev worked but I don't have the issue of water ingress into the garage - good luck

The IC is sealed, but has a small vent at the bottom side, IIRC in the middle. Looks like a labyrinth seal, but I assume, once there's a drop of water trapped inside the IC, there is no escape unless put into the warmth for a longer time.

The IC can't be dismounted easily, but I think it's possible. I have a spare one and will have a look at it as soon as time permits.

they don't. my cr mists up and makes it impossible to see the speed. legally I guess I could insist on a replacement, but that would more likely be as bad. shame as i love the rest of the bike

Hi all,

Yes the IC has a vent at the bottom, but if you remove the connector from the back and have a look into the IC, you will see that there is no seal, as you can see the circuit board around the plug edges. If you spit the IC, it will confirm this gap. The only seal at this point, is the rubber boot over the connector.
I did try, successfully, to put small pieces of dense foam around the aperture, but found it made the condensation problem worse! :(
After that, I removed the said foam, and tried a different tack, instead, I put a small hole in the bottom of the boot, to vent the IC at this point too.
It seems to improve the problem greatly, I couldn't say you never see condensation, but it has significantly reduced it, if and when, it does strike.
I'm happy with it now anyway. :yup:
