I've just made a new inner cable for my XB12 exhaust valve, so here's the information for anyone else who needs it:
Parts:6.00mm x 5.75mm cables nipples

gear cable (brake cable is too thick)
http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bike-parts/gears-drivetrain-cables/clarks-universal-inner-bike-gear-cable1. Cut the nipple off the bicycle gear cable, splay the end of it and solder a 6.00mm x 5.75mm nipple on it (have a look on youtube for videos on how to do this). My OEM cable inner was 126.5cm from nipple to nipple, so measure and mark the new one with a permanent marker).
2. With the chin fairing off, you can fit the new soldered nipple into the cam on the top of the exhaust , quite easily from the front.
3. Feed the new cable up through the cable outer from the bottom to the top (a bit fiddly but OK using some long nosed pliers to feed it into the cable tube). You may have to temporarily remove the adjustable part of the cable outer at the top to get the cable through.
4. You have two choices now, cut (using the mark you made earlier) the new cable and solder a new 6.00mm x 5.75mm nipple on to it, or use a solderless (screw type) 6mm nipple (probably best using a bit of threadlock).
5. Reattach the new cable to the actuator and adjust the cable following the instructions in the service manual.
