Yes it was the front wheel bearing. I thought the handling deficiencies, only noticed on the day, were down either to myself (not quite a hangover) or dodgy tyre pressures. It turned out that there were other problems which Maz sorted out. I am really grateful for his help and advice. Tarka's a star as well.
