Hi, in the UK for the weekend on the 2009 XB12XT.

Rode from Pembroke toward Bath, riding along A45 about 50mph just lost all power in the bike and coasted to a stop.

Ignition works, hands sweep across dials when turn the key... Lights on dash OK but red oil light stays on.

Turns over but doesn't "catch" . Full of fuel, oil level over mid point on stick when screwed in fully. Engine oil and filter and gearbox oil done a couple of weeks ago and been out a few times on the bike since then, no issues or lights.

New HD battery last year, on Optimate every few weeks... Getting sluggish to turn over now from repeated trying. Jump leads from another bike perked it up but still won't start.

Recovery on the way.

Any ideas what might be the issue?

Recovery will bring bike to "local" garage tomorrow... Any suggestions there.... Is Riders of Bristol good with Buells??

Thanks for the advise.

Eric.

Yeah, did that thanks also checked fuses.. Also disconnected battery to maybe reset electronics but no good .... Suspect maybe oil pressure sensor or oil pump maybe?? That's what AI Google says 🤔

Any idea what symptom is if oil pump or oil pressure switch go?? I've full set of Buell manuals at home but not much good to me there 😂

Thanks
Eric.

Riders of Bristol was a buell parts supplier if I'm correct!?
Thought that it was mentioned a lot of times when people asked about buell parts.

Does it have enough fuel in it and the correct fuel?
And do you hear the fuel pump priming when turning the key?

Yeah, 6 litres of so of fuel left in it when I coasted into the petrol station here... Topped it up with 10 litres or so here... It used about 10 litres of fuel this morning then topped up this afternoon and it used about 10 litres of that before it cut out... So just regular petrol, shouldn't be an issue with it.. Would have been before using 10 litres of it if it was a problem I think.

Oil light stays on after hands sweep across dials...

Thanks

Eric.

The oil light goes off when engine is running and there's oil pressure.
So the light has to be one when ignition is on and engine is off

Is the fuel pump priming?

Yes, light comes on when I turn on the key, previously as soon as I hit the starter the oil light always went off immediately, now it seems to stay on as the starter is turning the engine over ????

Even after changing the oil a couple of weeks ago the oil light only stayed on for maybe 3 or 4 seconds after starting the bike for the first time after the oil change then always went off immediately every start after that..... Maybe this is relevant, maybe not....

Thanks
Eric

sorry to hear of your troubles .
for me it sounds to be a fuel or electrical ignition ( no spark) problem.
as you stated " riding along A45 about 50mph just lost all power in the bike and coasted to a stop"
( an engine basically need 3 things to run, air, fuel, source of ignition )
If it was oil pump failure , oil light would of come on , and if ignored resulting in loss of power with grinding knocking sounds from engine as it seizes up .
But as yours is the xt model later engine, different oil pump set up I believe this is not a problem .

does fuel pump come on with ignition and prime( pressurise) system then stop after a few seconds. ( ideally need to check pressure) .

when battery was fully charged did engine sound normal whilst being turned over by started motor .

if so tends to point to elec problem , coil, crank position sensor ? ecu ? , IIRC there was a problem with routing of wires around headstock that over time caused a stress failure of a wire.

as Nutah has mentioned pash lives close by, and is or was know to riders of Bristol, also Pash and Gunter are the experts on ecmspy and diagnostics.

Thanks.

Rang Riders this morning and no mechanics work on a Saturday!! So bike can't be looked at today and once it is dropped at a garage the assistance is over... And I'm supposed to be on the ferry tomorrow afternoon...won't happen... So looks like the insurance will repatriate the bike to Ireland for me. Then try sort it out there.

I did have ecmspy running in the past so will probably be back asking for some diagnosis advise then.

Eventful biking weekend 😂

Eric.

Hope that it's not going to be a end for you owning and riding a Buell! :sad1:

It would be welcome if you can report back with your findings what the problem was!
