Standard US gearing ( different drive sprockets and speedo than UK / European spec ) gives a 5th gear ratio roughly equivilent to 4th gear on a UK spec X1.
I bought a X1 Blue Stripe in 1999 and had this US gearing alteration done from new because road test press reports at the time warned that a flat spot existed on a standard X1 at about 70 mph in top gear. I later learned that this flat spot could be cured by changing the air cleaner and exhaust can and ECU to "race" versions ( which is what most owners do anyway ) and stuck by the standard UK gearing when I changed to my current "Millenium" X1 in 2000.
The only problem I find with standard UK gearing is the ridiculously high 1st gear - which requires clutch slipping at anything less than about 15 mph in slow traffic.
