Didn't the DDFI S3 Thunderbolt replace the carburated S2 Thunderbolt in 1999?

Nope - The S3 (and S3T) were available alongside the S1 and M2 in 1997 and 1998 as well.

In the US the 1998 had thunderstorm heads . in EU just Lightning heads.

That is a 1997 EU Spec S3T with US S3 gearing plus one or two mod's. And almost no recalls. I've had it since May 1998 so I'm pretty sure they were about pre-99. Not an injector in sight.

Yup mine also started out as S3t and is 98 registered again with no fuel injection

97 and 98 S3s and S3Ts were carburated. The 99 model was fuel injected but not officially imported to the UK. To my knowledge just two 99 models of the S3 were imported for evaluation by Harley-Davidson UK. One of them is owned by Bernie who is these days just an occasional visitor to the forum.
