No idea if your box is knackered or not, but my '47 JAP/Enfield was raced for 5 seasons with a dry clutch (designed to be wet) and the primary chain was lubed with 2 drips per minute (always thrashed off the line in 2nd gear, with loads of slipping, to keep the wheel down lOl ) My Duc 1198 puts 170HP/97 ft/lb through a dry clutch too - the plates are the same as the 848 wet clutch.

I wired mine as soon as I got my xb, plugs that is. Didn't get a fancy thing though, just small drill bits and some stainless MIG wire :yup:

Ok, Clutch/plates seem to be fine, wasn't much crud in there either.
Got a drain plug from comino off a 2003 XB which fits fine, and as he said himself, will renew the o ring before I fit it.
Bought some cheap oil to flush things out with before putting the proper stuff in, and a new primary tensioner should arrive from HD Edinburgh on Friday, hopefully. It cost £27, including postage.
So....should know by this weekend if I'll be posting a 'Breaking XB' thread or not :!: ;)

and ta for lock wire tip Nate

I've always put a few winds of PTFE tape on the threads of sump bolts- They never leak and it helps bind the thread so they behave like nyloc nuts. just leave the first couple of threads clear so none goes in the engine. In fact it works on all the bolts on the bike!

Nate.

I'll second that, I wired all the important bits on my Cyclone.

HD Edinburgh took 4 days after they took delivery of the tensioner before they posted it to me
Tensioner fitted, primary casing etc all back together, All spilled oil washed off, brakes cleaned off with proper cleaner, and extremely contaminated pads junked & replaced. Plugs wired and bike ready to test :)

Ok, mostly smiles :D :D :D :D
Did a quick 20 mile round trip (for dog food!), and seems I have escaped the worst case scenario. Left my earplugs out, but to be honest, it was so flamin' windy here, I couldn't hear the engine at all until I stopped again anyway.
Changed up/down the box ok, and I loaded and unloaded each gear in turn, No problems. Will run it for another tank of fuel, then drain off the cheap oil and check chain tension etc. Am breathing a sigh of relief now though 8-)

However my 'new' o ring on the drain plug obviously wasn't good quality, as it's leaked, And I discovered that I must have had the clutch adjusted pretty poorly before this all happened, as it felt way better today. Also (if it aint broke, don't fix it) I will be putting my gear lever back to where it was, Raising it up a spline or two didn't make it any comfier, doh.

Reff: drain plug if its leaking then this to me would indicate why it fell out in the first place ie. worn or damaged threds in the primary case. Did you screw the plug in thight whils case was off?
Glad to hear its OK.

Nope, plug went in after case was replaced. Def the o ring at fault, It appears it was too 'fat' and has fouled at the edges and thus didn't seal. Easy fix :)

Excuse ridiculous update time guys/girls,
I eventually got decent RevTech oil back in the Primary today (maybe 300-400 miles since my last update) and surprised at how little shite came out with the cheap gear oil,
Definitely got away with it, Only minor tensioner adjustment needed, and it's not slightly worn :yup:
