Dunno but it is the same with any pair of forks. I would think a lot of it comes from spring contact with the stanchion as the forks are compressed.

Might be worth to have a look at the bushings too, mine looked like this after 15k mls.

:yt: The Showa and the more recent Ohlins (shit) internals I had in my 1198 Duc suffered from this; the oil was sparkly after 3k miles. My lovely K-Tech internals are hard anodised and have ptfe guides to stop this happening and cut down on stiction :yup:

Bushes are pretty good...

Maz actually told me they would be OK and only to have a look if there was a lot of corrosion or dirt under the dust seal...

Fork oil time...

Manual says HD Type E fork oil
:maz: recommends Screaming Eagle fork oil

...I am more likely to take :maz: 's advice, but what happens if I want to use another brand???

From here, SE comes in at 10.4 centistokes @ 100 deg C and 67.3 centistokes at 40 deg C. We are only interested in 40 deg C cos I don't think my fork oil is going to get much hotter than that.

67.3 centistokes puts us between 15 and 20W, but we could do with a wider spread of oil manufacturers, and stuff we can buy in the UK... Check this out...

So, if we do a direct comparison:

Belray 15W is 59 & 53 (first and second links)
Belray 20W is 82 & 74

Difference is about 10%, so we should be looking for something around 61 on the second link...

We can buy Silkolene in jolly ole England, and that comes out as 50 (15W) and 68 (20W)... If only Silkolene made a 17.5W :run:

I'll go with the Screaming Eagle for now...

Thanks to Daywalker for the links above

No pictures tonight :(

Forks filled with oil, damper rods pumped till 'money shot'. Air gaps set at 192mm (07 progressive springs). I would say you need 99% of a Screaming Eagle bottle of fork oil for each leg.

Front wheel bearings pulled. They have done about 5k and are in really good condition, however there is some wear cos the spacer was loose with the bearings in situ.

Front disc removed and mounting kit ready to be cleaned (along with the wheel) before refitting.

Should be on two wheels tomorrow night. :D

Made it my business to check for chaffing wires behind the flyscreen, nothing of note to report...

Pash, I cant tell you how chuffed I am at you posting this thread.....I get sick and tired of peeps telling me I'm a rip off merchant and doing unrequired work at a 10K service :headbang:
.......I get the ''but even a main dealer can do this service for 600 odd quid''/whatever.......can you imagine how much a proper 10K service would cost at a main dealer charging 90 odd quid an hour plus parts, plus vat ?......well in excess of 2K by my reckoning.
I've done literally 100's of 10K services over the years and I've got them down to around 2 full days of hard graft......at my rates, that wont see much change out of a grand with parts.
As you've already discovered, I can 100% guarantee that at 10K the steering head bearings, swingarm bearings and forks are well and truely knackered, those peeps that spend the dosh always appreciate what a different bike they ride home on 8-)
