Why does Beefs bike look like it's got the pox. If my S1W looked like that I'd hide it right at the back of the garage where nobody goes.

I use Pinterest, it's still free, for now anyway

Which is great... But I've got thousands of photos on Photobucket, specifically to share here, which I can no longer share... Sections like 'How To' no longer have photos shared and I would day it is a few weeks work to put my photos on Pinterest and update all the links...

Hmm, good point. Would it be possible to host relevant photos on the UKBEG website? I know it would still be a lot of work, but it would hopefully only need to be done once. I'm sure there would be vounteers to help if necessary, me included.

Yes, of course, but if we cast our minds back, Photobucket was the chosen evil to reduce the load on the ukbeg site. An IT bloke could write a script to search the forum for any Photobucket links, download the file, put it on ukbeg and finally update the link... Wish I could do stuff like that...

It's the ethanol vapours in the fuel permeating through the tank but getting caught by the paint.....It got this bad when I was in Canada - apparently they have very high ethanol content in fuel!

Great write up Pash.

My shock is a million times better but still isn't right.

I was riding around with no preload and all adjusters on 0 and it still felt like I had a solid bar in place of a shock! I was seriously considering going back to the Showa.
I now have a comfortable ride until I get spirited, then she starts to buck and bounce.
the biggest issue is that although I understand what is happening inside a shock, I do not fully understand what I am feeling to be able to say "I need more X or less Y damping"

Although hitting bumps seems comfortable now, a couple occasions I was fired off the seat by the bike coming up - does that mean I need more rebound damping? :?

Why hasn't anyone built a suspension dyno rolling road :?:

Beef....
get out the old Bergen
fill it with sand, until you get the correct ride setting"feel" on the bike
then weigh the Bergen sand combo,
then eat pies, chips & Guinness until correct weight is attained
simples

:uhoh:
I'm not a real scientist BTW

I am going to try and give an overview of damping in the simplest terms possible.
You cant diagnose something if you don't understand how it works.

First off imagine just a spring with no damping at all.
It absorbs shocks but then continues to spring creating a bouncing motion. This bouncing will gradually lessen in size unless it hits more bumps which start it all up again, too many bumps in a row and it gets bigger.
So we need the damping to control the movement.
REBOUND;
Start first off by turning all damping to lowest settings it will feel very active and lively when ridden, then tune in rebound damping 2 clicks at a time and testing until you feel the back end come under enough control for you to forget about its action.
If you go too far then when you hit a series of bumps the damping will stop the shock returning to a neutral position and it will become compressed (Packed )and unable to absorb any more shocks, so less is more here.
COMPRESSION
Next is adding compression damping, This may be just 1 adjustment, or 2 ( high and low speed) in posh shocks
Generally speaking Compression damping slows the compression of the shock as the spring is squeezed/ squashed.
This can help by reducing the squat {pushing the rear down and compressing the shock) produced by the drive of the engine acting on the rear wheel and also by making the shock react more firmly in certain situations.
No/ too little compression damping at all will show itself either by bottoming out when hitting bumps or when winding on the torque when exiting a corner it can result in a pogoing affect as the shock bottoms out and bounces off the stop repeatedly.
Too much compression damping can result in too solid a feel which transmits too much shock back to the rider or result in loss of traction.

If you don't start from zero it could be easy to mix up bottoming out with too much damping, the result is the same shock transfered to the rider

Slow adjustment refers to slow shock movements caused for example by loading up the spring during cornering or winding on out of a bend. Fast adjustment refers to fast movements of the shock produced by things such as hitting a bump at speed.

What you are trying to achieve is stopping the shock bottoming out in slow and fast movement situations without making it so hard it transmits shock to the rider.

Again start adding a couple of clicks at a time and test by accelerating out of a bend. keep going till the bike remains composed, No wallowing. Again don't over do it and make the bike too hard.

If you have fast settings too then increase this gradually so the bike can react to a big pothole or bump without bottoming out but don't go so far that it reduces the movement allowed to less than full stroke.
Some bumps will be outside what a shock can cope with so a compromise that fits the bill the majority of the time is what you are searching for.

Does that make any sense at all? Wish i'd never started that but if a bit of it helps then all good.

Sorry but forgot to mention, before you mess with Damping you must get static sag right,
That is setting the spring preload so that the shock/ is working around the middle of its stroke.
Loads of info on the net, easier with a mate.
Then set the damping.
Ohh do'nt forget the forks have to match. and conrtol braking without bottoming out.

i got that cheers, but isn't one of the adjusters back to front or something-so when on zeroits actually on full or something? :?
