Lying down with a torch helps, so does one of these sockets:

And on the subject of sockets, good fitting ones are a must, don't be tempted to use a 13mm socket cos it looks right, 0.3mm difference is a big deal on a 1/2" AF hex, especially those that live within such a wide temperature range as those you are trying to remove.

OOOOOOO..............that's a lovely bit of tool Porn 8-) . I think I feel a bit of a spend coming on :D

As you can see there is a crack on the underside which extends from the old oil fitting,if you double click on the image you will get a bigger and clearer pic.

it's gonna need another crankcase, unless he knows a very skilled welder maybe ?

the trouble is the crankcase change means a full motor strip, so unfortunately, likely to cost more than the bike is worth in labour alone ,unless you can rebuild it yourself

bad news sorry

Its not repairable, the crack extends all the way to the centre of the housing,i dont know how deep it goes either so it will probably cost more to repair than the bike is worth.........however.......I'm not going to give up on my Buell.......so if anyone knows of an XB12R engine for sale then please let me know......She will live again....

This one from the USA

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/06-Buell ... ccessories

I would have thought this engine should bolt back in place - same engine am I right?

What would "rob.bruce" damaged engine be worth for sale as spares? It must have some value!

You could be in tears by the end of your 'Buell Adventure' Rob. You're looking at a £1k for a new engine

Yeah on keeping the old one for spares (although as apart from the crankcases) I assume its good. Maybe someone with a motor problem might want it.Would help ease the pain money wise at least.
From the look of the damage welding would not really be an option in my opinion.

And even if, engine cases would have to be split for planing the surface, so there's no real advantage doing so.
