Okay so here sthe latest ...

Been holding off buying a new regulator untiul I am absolutely sure that it needs to be replaced. This morning I did a few checks before replacing the lightbulb and found the following:

Ignition on (Engine not running) volatage at 14.8v
Engine running voltage at 14.8v

Then thought I'd check all wiring and founds that all earths were still good. Unplugged and reconnected R/R connectors, small amount of oxidation on front plug pins but nothing horrible. Traced cables toward ECM and found that one of the sets of cables just behind the air duct and just after the connector furtherest from the R/R was rubbing against the rear cylinder. Ran my finger along the cable as visibility is not existent and it felt like it had worn through (this will only be confirmed when I strip the cable out for an full inspection) so have loosely cable tied the cable against the engine brace for now. Rechecked the output before installing the lightbulb and got ...

Ignition on (Engine not running) volatage at 13.8v
Engine running voltage at 15v

Also have not had the usual CEL today ..... yet. Hoping that has solved the problem but only time will tell, so wish me luck. If that has sorted the problem then the problem is going to be caused by either a cable short (if the insulation has been breached) to the back of the motor or a bad plug connection due to slight oxidation. My money is on a cable short to be honest but as mentioned I wont know until I can properly inspect the back of the cable ;)

That said, if I pop another lightbulb then the R/R must go along with 127 of my quids.

Deepsix, thanks for the PM, will look into it.

Okay so the latest update is that just as I thought things were peachy ...... Pop goes the weasel :0(
Next stop DG20 (as they are the only ones that have one in stock and I need it urgently).the odd thing is that CEL has not come on at all over the past three days apart from the usual startup precheck.

As I found a similar case in XBORG, are there any news on this one?

Hi,just wondering how you eventually got on Marsh,I've had charging probs lately(cel light etc) and thought I had it sorted but my 08 XB12XT has now started blowing low beam bulbs only, starting to look like its my regulator, will Y0302.02A8 work(if i change my connectors on?) as i can buy it through a mate in the states for a great price or do i need Y1302.02A8 which is a lot more expensive?

Hi jdh1340,

As per our PM, new RR resolved the issue and I would recommend using the genuine article from HD. In my case the silicone insulator at the back of the RR perished and was open to the elements. I expect this was the cause of the RR failing

Got the r/r,fitted and prob solved, just as you found Marshy(thanks again),the silicone backing had perished and all the water from the from the front wheel prob forced its way in,its an absolutely shite design, that silicone couldnt hold up to heat and our weather,I'm going to look at making a backing plate and sealing it on cause I cant see it lasting long again especially where its located, anyone with an xt with the short fender should check the back of their r/r for perished silicone,is there a fender extender that fits the xt?

Hi John, glad you got it sorted but was the chaps in the forum that put me on the right track. Good idea about the fender extender, I may look at getting one myself.
