When I did the twin discs on my X1, I also went to a larger bore master cylinder. Braking wasn't really any better without it. It was either a 13/16" or 7/8". Can't remember that far back.

The only reason I can see keeping the stock master cylinder is for less pressure on each disc which would solve the problem of warping they're known for.

Dont think anyone makes a master in those sizes.......think you'll find that you actually fitted a 5/8'' ? :?

Stock 1/2'' will exert more pressure but at the expense of extra travel and less 'feel'

Never known an X1 disc to warp :?

Thinking back, it was a 3/4". Was a Brembo unit as were the calipers. Perhaps my FXDX had a larger one? As I said, been a long while since.

I actually had 3 discs warp and were replaced under warranty. (Damaged the caliper in the process) Something about the heat treatment at the time. Hard spots throughout were causing inconsistent temperatures as it was explained to me. Seemed like it was a common problem on my shores. I remember plenty of other BWBers were complaining about it as well.

Warping has nothing to do with pad 'pressure' and everything to do with uneven heating/cooling (eg holding the brakes on on a stationary hot disc) or poor design not allowing natural expansion/contraction.

I mentioned pad pressure thinking less heat would be put into each disc in a twin setup without increasing master cylinder size. Perhaps the max temp would be less so the heat/cool cycle would be less extreme.

I watched an interesting promo video the other day for Galfer.
I always thought those wavey discs where BS, but apparently the wavey thing helps disperse gas buildup between pad and disk, and aid cooling.
When it was explained it sort of made sense.
They're using them on race bikes, so I suppose they must have some benefit.
It does reduce pad contact area though, which makes me think would a conventional disc get hotter with the same contact patch of a wavey disc?
So the jury's still out for me.

I see a lot of times people think a larger bore master cylinder will give more pressure at the caliper, when in fact it's the other way around.
Think a womans (Or a Guy if you're into that sort of thing!) stilletto heel. Small contact patch with X amount of weight, against a Doc Martin sole with the same weight. Which is gonna hurt more?

Good or bad though you've got to admit that wavey discs look so gay .........fecking aweful looking things .

I have to agree with you on that. You don't see them on race cars. So although I try to keep an open mind, I still lean a little towards BS. (or caca de vaca as they say here lOl )
I stand to be proven wrong though.
If I remember at the end of this month, I'll ask when I'm at BGD, as they're making stuff for Moto GP and BSB.

Not that I'm sticking up for wavey discs, but perhaps cars don't need them because they have vented discs-which you don't see on bikes :!: :)

Well Galfer would have looked right idiots if they did not give a half believable reason in their own promo video.

I wonder 8-) Why are ventilated discs not fitted to bikes?.

Would it be scurrilous to suggest it's because they're not necessary. ?

Probably to do with how much more weight a cars brakes have to stop therefore more heat needing more cooling+ the discs are mounted in the wheel making cooling less efficient.....or unsprung weight :?: :?

But then I'm probably miles off the mark :!: lOl lOl :sad1:

Exactly. Which is why I lean towards believing it's caca de vaca. ;)

....You'd also have to take into account the extra caliper width and possibly clearance problems on a bike wheel, where it's not such an issue on a car

Have you seen how close some sports car callipers are to the rim? - Bike discs are generally exposed (except on Goldwings with bling covers) car discs are generally fairly enclosed inside a rim. (Inboard discs excepted) And most have dust covers etc to keep wheels clean.
