Can't get headers of at the moment need to get some heat on front nuts

Can you tell me the procedure for removing the cam cover as l want to check the gears and oil pump before I decide my next move.

You must unload the pressure from the cams before removing the cover ....this is done by removing the rocker boxes and arms whilst that cylinders valves are in the closed position the second cylinder can then be left at tdc with it's valves unloaded if you don't want to remove both sets .

You can save yourself much trouble by just pulling the oil pump and peeking through that hole.

Cam gears look ok.

Could anybody tell me what socket is needed for the head bolts

Head bolts are 1/2" AF 12 point (double hex), a 1/2" AF double hex socket will fit.

What does your oil pump gear look like out of interest?

Heads and barrels removed, more pictures of oil pump gears all look fine.

Don't seem to be any play in between con rods and crank?

Is it my imagination or does that oil pump gear look worn?

It does look thin on it's teeth and definitely wants replacing on rebuild but doesn't look like it's caused any other problems.

On second investigation there is play on front cylinder bottom end.

What a great opportunity. Check out Willy's post on what he and Brian ate doing with the big end on his crank for sizing or try powerglides for a crank rebuild.
