This part of the crank is not a taper.

Just emphasising how little work a Woodruff key should do, cos they'll shear as soon as look at you if the clutch works loose on a Brit bike :D

The oil pump drive gear is prone to failure on pre-06 bikes. The teeth wear thin then fall off. You look to have been quite lucky, others have lunched the whole engine...

The later oil pump drive gear, made from Phosphur Bronze, is more durable.

This is a gentle reminder for me to replace the oil pump drive gear on my Firebolt...

Does this affect X1s? Now shitting myself.....

Checked the oil pump drive gear during oil change today.
Rotated the engine to get a 360 deg view of the gear and looks fine. :yup:
Bike 03 XB9S 21,000 miles.
Will check again at 25,000 miles.

I wonder if the drive stripped first or if it was a problem like Muffin suffered a few years ago when the oil pump jammed due to a small piece of valve spring getting into the pump return port?

Seems like a two pence coin to me.

As Gunter says, but the other bit used to point to the 2p coin looks like a gear change shaft, and one that has been chatting to the Titanic...

If it is from the Buell you will have a hole on the primary side of the engine and you have broken the actuator off the end, but it doesn't look like it came from the Buell for a number of reasons...

thanks for all your help guys ,
well we have that pin and 2 screws left over... not bad for a man build :P .
I took the bike for a ride and it ran verry lumpy ,after about 5 miles it seemed to get worst,
almost like a plug bracking down ,there wasn't any metallic sound coming from the engine and I could seem to fine a position on the throttle where it ran fine, so im thinking it may need setting up,
Can any one point me to a post on setting the bike up?

Have a look in the How To section for TPS reset.

Look in the manual to check static timing.
