Not sure where to post this but here's the problem. An aluminium casting with two needle roller bearings well rusted in. these are both up to a shoulder showing just half of each needle roller, do i try eaze it oil and a hot air gun and drifting them out. The casting is powder coated so a flame is out of the question. Also thinking of drilling/grinding a small section of the shoulder away and drifting each bearing out from the opposite side. Don't have the use of a mlling machine so thats another avenue closed. Any other thoughts i've glaringly overlooked are most welcome. Cheers in advance DaveH |

I've had some sucess with the following method of removing stubborn bearings (in fact some have just fallen out): If possible run a bead of weld (I use TIG) around the bearing and as it cools and contracts so does the bearing making it loose in it's housing. If this isn't possible due to the finish on the case, blind bearing puller - good luck. |

Adam wrote: That's a top tip nos I shall be experimenting with that one Tis a very good way to shrink a bearing ........obviously depends on what the bearing is fitted in ...we use that method a lot at work to remove bearings from steel rolls.....not sure i would use it to remove old steering head or swingarm bearings though.....may scortch the paint a bit

Just an update on the needle roller saga. The bearing puller pulled the least corroded bearing out cleanly giving me a false sense of security. The next one the puller pulled the rollers and cage right out out of the shell openig up the outer lip. After much head scratching i used a dremel with a selection of mini grinding stones grinding the shell until i could collapse the bugger in. After a bit of a sweat on it came out with out damage to the ally casting.
