Post subject:  Front "ratchets" rather than progressive.
Hi
Had my Firebolt 12 for 3 or 5 months now and the front brake is decidedly "ratchety" ie it grabs in jumps rather than being a smooth, progressive bite.
Any ideas? Is it suddenly going to grab and not let go and chuck me off in the process?? Or one day not grab at all and I drive into the back of a bus??!!

Hey dude

There are plenty of posts on this. It is the result of the pad material sticking to the disc when the brake is mainained on with a hot disc whilst stationary.

You can recover the disc to a certain extent by using some brake cleaner with steel wool or emery paper, then using some better pads than stock, for example "Braking" (the brand) that you can get from Geo Hannah (you can PM Woz) or Maz if you are passing.

Brand new to this forum malarky, looked in the "Technical Forum" for similar posts but couldn't see anything like so where should I be looking?

I don't think it's a warped disc but could be wrong. Have pushed the bike along and there's a steady constant "ssssshhhh" from the disc/pads as the wheel turns. It's not a D.T.I. test I know but it's an indicator! Someone at work suggested perished seals in the master cylinder, any thoughts?

I think we are talking pad material migration. Measure the runout and let us know what it is. Also, measure the disc thickness.

FWIW, I use EBC HH pads and they are excellent after the standard Korean cardboard that passes for brake pads!!! Nice 'n smooth 'n progressive! :app:

Well,I took the " do nothing and see how it goes" approach and it seems to have sorted itself out now!

I was looking forward to these brakes when I bought the Buell, I thought they'd be something amazing but they're pretty average really eh? No "stoppies" for me!!!

There must be somthing wrong with them as mine are outstanding, now if you where talking about the rear brake then id agree there $h1t !!!!

Change the pads, rear, to SBS or other and then great.
