Guys, I'm looking for some advice on where in the York area (or reasonably close) one can take an X1 with a Mikuni carb and a race ECU to get it put on a dyno and exhaust gas analyzer and have it adjusted. It pinks a bit under heavy load and full open throttle, though 97 octane fuel, *almost* cures it. It's just needs a bit of feddling.

Is Maz the closet man in the area or is there somebody else with the equipment? My plan was to take the bike to Moorespeed down South, but the X1 has now been sold to a chap living up in York, and he obviously wants to get that looked at as and when, so I wanted to check with you chaps to see who I could recommend to him.

TA! =)

I know there was some discussion about this before, however I think I understood that you have a Race ECM on the bike with no TPS input, only CPS. Yeah?

The ignition units on carb-ed bikes have a VOES, so the ignition unit knows when the throttle is closed and hence when to give it a bit of advance.

Your map looks like this:

With no TPS, you will be at 0 TPS regardless of throttle opening, so a whopping 45 deg advance from 3500 upwards on WOT, no wonder it knocks... Bet it runs rubbish too...

What would I do?

Well, firstly I would get a VOES and plumb it in like this:

Then I would remap the ignition like this (and do the same on the rear):

Or of course, fit an ignition system into the cam cover (less carve up of your wiring loom), like a Dyna 2000i

Hi Pash, thanks for the info. I am not sure whether all of it applies though because the bike actually runs fine (apart from the pinking). Plenty of power, idles well, no hesitation and steady torque curve right to the top of the rev range. Obviously all measure by my seat of my pants dyno. So I am not sure what the previous owner did to the ECU and how they mapped it, but they haven't done a bad job at it. The pinking only started after I had the squish band machined in the heads to raise the compression a smidgen. Though as said, 97 Octane fuel actually helps a lot and it's almost imperceptible.

P.S. I can't do any of this work because I don't have the cables or the software. Who up north can do this sort of stuff. Of course, if you think Maz is the best man to go to I will recommend that to the new owner of the bike without hesitation. Just wasn't sure whether he had an exhaust has analyzer kicking around..... ;)

Yes, I have a 5 gas exhaust analyser but doubt very much whether I would need it........as I have said to you before and as Pash has pointed out above, your problem is ignition based.

Hi Maz, that's all I needed to know. Are you happy for me to point him in your direction for the work?
