I broke down on my ride last night. The bike was misfiring when I started off, it had been running fine the last time I rode it on Sunday so assumed that washing it on Monday night had left some ingress of water. It didn't improve and the engine fault light kept coming on. When I stopped at traffic lights it stalled and each time I restarted it and tried to pull away it stalled. It turned out that the side stand cutout switch was working the wrong way round!!! I could pull away with the sidestand down but in gear with the engine running it showed a side stand warning when the stand was up, this disappeared if I put the stand down. I got home by wedging some paper between the stand and the switch mounting.

I'm going to have a look at it tonight but wondered if anyone else has had this problem?

Thanks.

Chaffed wire would be my guess. Had something similarish which was sorted by a bit off heatshrink around the offending wires.

If you feel confident to ride without one then it can be removed - do a search, I'm sure that it's been talked about before. The switch is a European spec. - it's not fitted to USA bikes.

The malfunction may well be caused by water ingress - try blowing the switch out with an air line or can of compressed air or even a hair dryer, that's what I used when I had a problem with the rear brake light switch staying on !

I rode with me side stand switch not plugged in for a while, after it had a hissy fit. I really dont know why these switch's where put on in the first place, [prob some jobs worth from brussels. Its just another part to replace or to go wrong if and when it does.
I does throw a code when unplugged.

Thanks for the pointers, I noticed the digital display is a little misted at the edges so I'm guessing it could be dampness. However I didn't pressure wash it, just a garden hose.

This is probably a stupid question but the manual keeps refering to HDI models, the sidestand switch is evidently only fitted to HDI models. What does the HDI stand for?

HDI - Harley Davidson International - ie models built for sale outside the USA.

Or is it Harley Davidson Incorporated ?

Unfortunately the IC is not sealed, it will mist up in the winter.

Well I tried cleaning up the sensor contacts and checked for breaks in the wire but no luck. So I took the sensor off and went for a ride. lOl

All good except the warning light and error codes. Are parts only available from HD dealers in the UK?

And I noticed how hot the frame and seats get in town, is that normal?

Yup. Don't ride in shorts.

just to go off topic / quick tip - I put a tesco bag over me IC when washing the bike just to try and prevent any water etc going in to the IC, personally I've never had a problem with me IC misting up. Has to be a tesco bag though ;)

on topic - mostly peeps either get there parts through B/Bear or Maz - you can get your parts from the US put I think thats stopping soon, orders from the mother ship

And are you sure the sensor didn't just need adjusting slightly ;)

I can't see anyway of adjusting it, how do you do that? I tried unscrewing the bolt on the stand that contacts with it but that didn't make any difference.
