Post subject:  Buell bobber, help please!

Hy, I am building a hardtail bobber and have just bought a 2003 Buell xb12r motor to go on frame. I have with the engine a race ecu and wiring loom, also have injection unit and airfilter:box etc.. The injection unit /carb and airbox are useless to me as won't go on for cross bar so I need to convert it to side exit carburettor. My question is can I do it, is it possible to do the conversion on this and if so how will the race ecu cope with the missing connections on airbox and carb. I know with the race ecu I can run straight through pipes but my knowledge on anything else with this motor is limited.

Thanx for reading, look forward to hearing your feedback.

Anything is possible with the ECM. I would keep marching forward with a carb setup. I put together a solution for a similar challenge for Mich not so long ago, I will dig it out.

We can address the details as and when.

In the meantime, if you wish to donate the throttle body to me.... <angel smiley>

Have a look at this:

viewtopic.php?p=153509#p153509

As you are using an XB, the older water spark timing cup cannot be used as a change to the XB cams moves the location 'keyway' by 90 degrees so the easiest way is to forge on with the XB ECM. If you send me your EEPROM file I can make all the changes necessary for you.

I am actually doing something similar myself at the moment.

Thanx for the prompt response. So it can be done, great stuff. I need a inlet manifold for side facing carb and have been told I can use any 1200 sportster carb? But i would be cool With anthing else that fits.
If you have access to carbs that fit this I'd be glad to do you a swap for my shit.
Appologise if I am not using the correct terminology but like I said my knowledge on this motor is limited and is my first build.

Thanx very much again for the offer of help, god knows I'm gonna need it.

Gstunts, these guys sell a rotor cup to convert the sensor to run late model ignitions ( Sportster I assume ) and carb -

http://www.bareknucklechoppers.com/builderparts.html

They may take a while to respond to you though as on their front page they say that they're still cleaning up after the tornadoes !

Never done business with them - just had a bit of a look on google.

Also you may want to take a nose around BadWeatherBikers - there will probably be more expertise on there.

And don't forget google is your friend !

Ooh, hadn't seen that... Nice one G...

Although looking at the picture the keyway appears to be in the same place as the Sportster one 32402-83, which wont work.

So anyway, when you get back from Badweb (the XL Forum may give you some more useful info), you are going to need to do the following:

Mounting the carb
You will need:
intake seals (26995-86A)
a manifold (27004-88A)
a carb seal (27002-89)
a carb (they come up on EBay)
a carb bracket (29481-98Y)
a few gaskets for the bracket (29059-88A)
a few 1/2" UNC x 1/2" long allen screws to mount the carb

You will need to face, drill and tap two holes 1/2" UNC in the bosses in the casting on each head.

Getting the ignition to work
You will need a VOES (Vacuum Operated Electrical Switch 26555-94)

You need to wire the vacuum operated switch as per the link I gave you above.

You will need to wire the ECM as follows:

The ignition timing table should be set (as a starter) as the link above.

You will also need to null any tables with affect the ignition timing, but you are a long way off that yet. When you get close I will show you what to do.
