Post subject:  Clutch adjustment S1 ?

Just been out for a long blast, Av IT! :P and bike became increasingly reluctant to change gear, no crunching , clatter or false neutral just had to double attempt most changes, particularly up shifts.
Noticed that the clutch lever play was 6mm or 7mm and the cable doesn't return back in readily of its own accord.
So I presume that my cable may need some lube and the slack taking in.
Question......is it best to do this at the mid cable adjuster which Maz has kindly caked in copper slip  very mesy.
Or is it best to adjust at the other end behind the inspection cover with big hex thingy with the spring on it and a screw in the centre.........Or both...... :?:
Any cable lubing tips would be handy, I've got a cable lubing gismo that looks like a cross between a pen and a hypodermic needle.
Any ideas or tips most welcome.
Rich :yup:

Wot richie says, but my cable us lubed up...

Got to wonder why it has gone slack all of a sudden. Is your cable about to fail? Best check it out in case you get stranded...

The play on the lever has recently increased very gradually possibly due to warmer weather :? Have been putting off going into the ocean of copper slip coz everything was working fine.
Anyway done it now...not too messy :yup:
Off for a test run.....get outta the way grockles. :P

Sorry, misread richie's post. Adjust at the bottom I say...

Right, have adjusted at the middle (play now 3-4mm) and not much better, down shifts ok but upshift you need to lift the lever twice to get the next cog especially when changing up quickly.
Have just tried feeling by hand with the engine off, all gears there just sounds like there's something a bit loose in there :?
Will try adjusting beneath the inspection cover.
Thanks for help.

Slack the cable right off, remove the cover over the clutch and adjust the slotted screw for the required free play there. Then adjust the cable for free play.

Then, later with Coppaslip, refit the boot (possibly with a smear of silicone around its neck and fit a tie wrap to stop water getting into the rubber boot.

Like Pash sez, check the cable ain't letting go - if it is, I've got a spare you can borrow until you can buy another. If you're lucky, Maz might have a parts stall at D4 lOl

Ok done the full reajustment of the clutch behind cover and on the cable.
When manually putting it down to first as you release the lever no noise, when you click up to 2nd when you release the lever there is a little metalic ting noise, not there when clicking up to neutral though, can't get 3,4 and 5 now but that is normal with engine not going.

OK done test run, everything perfect initially, biting point spot on and could feel every gear like new.......but after a few miles of good thrashing the problem returns, when changing up from 1st - 2nd , 2nd - 3rd only, feels like no gear there unless you double pump the gear lever, doesn't happen every time though.
Interestingly the biting point has moved out from the bars but cable play has remained constant so cable hasn't suddenly slackened.......weird shit man :sad1:
Help Maz, it no worky properly.

Post subject:  Re: Clutch adjustment S1 ?

Well have re-tried the full adjustment process and it just seems to move the problems focus to different gears and is definately heat affected as the bike when cold initially works perfect.
So I could change the cable as it don't return all the way back of its own accord and stays fixed at the limit of the free play even after a bit of lube.
Could also change the trans fluid as its done 3k+, it looks clean but a little darker than previous inspections when its been a pale brown with a gray tinge, so possibly contaminated with engine oil due to the crank seal needing replacing :?
Other than tht I'm out of ideas.
Please help Maz
