What is it you want to achieve? Have you got US gearing fitted?

no, standard uk gearing fitted...want to gear it down a bit.

been looking for a while..just the rear would probably be ok ..but saw the primary kit for sale..heard little of it other than speedo remains the same and that it was pricey. Then the comments re gearbox spares triggered my paranoia.

have a look at this thread :yup:
a Sportster rear pulley will do the job IF you get the right one :yup:

Thats all good but is there any known issues with the primary drive kit?

Dunno, but why bother when you can get a better solution by swapping sprockets? I wouldn't pull the primary cover and remove the primary drive if I could achieve the same goal a different way...

Seem to remember some thing in the sales blurb from trojan about weight saving and flywheel effect , would love to see the advert again but i cant find it.I cant seem to find a 61t pulley for less than 100 quid when its been posted from us..i am too tight.

Lowering the primary ratio will put more strain on the gearbox compared to lowering the gearing using the pulleys though and is the major concern with doing it that way ...also it involves stripping internals rather than just changing pulleys so means you have to factor in the extra labour involved including orimary gasket and gearbox oil change + possibly new primary chain adjuster etc if you find it's getting worn when you get inside the engine. Ultimately your bike /your choice but general opinion is pulleys is the best way. ;)

dont really understand how there is more strain on the gearbox..can you explain please

crankshaft...>gearbox...>rear wheel

if you lower the primary gearing between the crankshaft..>gearbox input
you are stressing the gearbox

if you lower the gearing after the gearbox you aren't

I still dont really understand how there can be more torque if the engine output remains the same...but i am aware that in my own expierience of changing primary drive ratio is that gearing it higher puts greater strain on the clutch..never really worked out how...but using that example it seems to me that lowering it would give the clutch and then i would think the gearbox an easier time......what am i missing?...

maybe so...sometimes i'm just a human with normal human traits like imperfection..so come on maz fill me in..is there an issue with the primary kit and if so can you explain it to me please so that someone like me can follow it
