Hello In February this year noticed a major engine rattle in my machine. After removal of the rocker cover found up to .040" of play in the rear exhaust valve, this in turn lead to an examination of the camchest area. After removal of chest cover, inspection revealed 3 of the 4 inner bushings had loosened in the crankcases and spun causing damage to crankcase (ovalation). There is scarring on the cam lobes and also on the pinion shaft on the crank. There is also damage to the outer bushing of the pinion shaft. The oil level was as always correct. Am I correct in assuming that this engine is now total scrap or is there any cost effective way to repair it?? Does anyone know who can repair and any indication of cost etc?? I should point out that i have spoken to about this issue briefly some time ago, before I carried out the inspection, and he pretty much diagnosed the problem over the phone (how good is that!! lol) Basically the inspection confirmed my worst fears. The machine was first registered in 2008 and had a complete rebuild under warranty in march 2009 due to big end failure. Thanks Attachment: engine damage2.jpg [ 5.44 KiB | Viewed 819 times ]

My thoughts are though that unless you know why it has suffered two catastrophic failures .......... would it even be wise to repair it again? I think if it was mine i'd be tempted to find out if an engine that has failed twice in thattime was of merchantable quality................ Buell maybe don't exist now but Harley do ...have you contacted them regarding the issues? |

That engine is scrap.......shame it didn't fail in the year after the dealer rebuilt it, as that damage is almost certainly a result of shoddy workmanship......99% of highly trained dealer techs aint got a fuckin clue ......having said that, I've seen that sort of failure many times now |

Tuber owners will buy the rocker covers. Ebay the rods, gearbox and clutch. That should take some of the sting out of a s/h motor. |

Yes contacted Harley about it but got the usual PFO,could go legal but I guess that has its own hidden costs. Think I will take Adams advice but go one further and try selling the chassis, which is just superb, and get myself another bike. Thanks again
