Right I know their are whole chapters on adjustment of shocks for perfection etc but what I need to know in basic layman (or Mirman) terms is:

I have at last obtained the correct size large spanner and strap wrench to release the lock nut and to turn the shock cyclinder body. I want to stiffen (load up) the suspension a little, I know I should take all the measurements from frame down etc but for the riding I do and all the flipping speed bumps (18 a day) too from work all I want to do is add a few turns (3-4) to the shock to just add a little more firmness.

If my understanding is correct: I undo the locknut, wind it back along the thread clear of the shock body (towards the rear tyre) then if correct I turn the shock body in the direction so it turns and gets closer to the released lock nut? Is this the right direction to tighten the suspension? ie the visible threaded area/length reduces?

I await your feedback, the last shock I adjusted had a good old fashion c spanner and notches . . . and it had two of them.
PS It is a standard original shock.
