The 'teeth face' is anodised. Stuff like paint stripper won't budge it. Don't worry if it looks flakey, it'll be fine

Due to the dreaded flakey paint syndrome, I decided to strip the paint of my rear sprocket with Nitromors and a scraper with a view to having it powder coated...such fun, I must have too much time on my hands! The coating on the teeth faces, although chipped in a number of places, is rock hard and nitromors won't budge it. Is it a different coating to whats covering the rest of the sprocket and therefore best left in place or could it be that the coating has work hardened in some way? |

Yep leave the teeth alone ....they all flake and won't cause any problems BUT if you powdercoat the teeth you may well find that the profile will no longer match the belt . So leave the teeth as is and just powder coat the rest if you must

hi steve 62 i know what you mean about the flakey paint looks kind shite most def agree with kevmean the plastic coat will reduce the depth of tooth and pitch between the teeth don't think it would last long before the belt tried to peel it off  not to sure on the anodised bit ???? i thought anodised was only a few thou deep kinda like a stain used on bling items in various colours red, gold, blue ,silver and black, and if you scratch the surface the parent metal is exposed aluminium where as the OEM sprockets the flakey bits are thicker/deeper . trojan horse racing do an after market replacement sprocket that is anodised but at £250 bit expensive wish i could help more , mine has started to flake and would like to find a answer too |

Yes Barney, the coating is kinda thick for it to be an anodised surface. Im thinking it might be a ceramic coating. Im not going to touch/do anything with the teeth. Ive removed the paint now and deciding on whether to powder coat or paint. The trouble with painting aluminium, even with Hammerite paint, you need to put an appropriate undercoat on first. Also, there's no doubt it won't be as durable as powdercoating. I think its gonna be a pain to mask off the teeth but its got to be done! On a previous thread, polishing was suggested. While it looks lovely, it would be too high maintenance for me. I work on my bikes enough already and I am tryng to spend more time riding them. I fairly sure that I'll go the powdercoating route. All finished, but what a load of work. My coater could only powder coat, so I had to prepare it (strip, clean and mask). Removing the masking tape after it had been coated and baked on was fun! I thought I was mad half way through the job, but the end result is brill and therefore Im glad I did it. Make sure that you really hate that flakey paint before you consider doing the same.
