Post subject: | XB12XT Error Codes 15, 16 and 45 - Running and idling rough |
Hi All, Hoping someone can give me some advice on the following. My '08 Uly has been a bit of a nightmare over the past couple of weeks. It has fouled 2 sets of plugs (1 set iridiums about 10 months old and a set of HD gold originals less than a week old). I have also had an issue where the CEL will come on for around 5-10 mins and then go off again but put that down to low battery because I do a lot of short distance runs to work and back everyday 5 days a week. The battery itself is the original one from new and so I bought a new one yesterday, trickle charged it overnight and then installed it today with a new set of NGK plugs. The bike starts fine now but its not running as great as I expect it to, the problems are as follows: 1) Idles erratically. It will idle fine for a little while and then bounce around and then idle fine again 2) When I blip the throttle (bike is stationary) she's fine on the uptake but pops excessively on the back draft. 3) I can ride her but every now and then she'll cut out as I accelerate (which may be the error 45 [kickstand Switch]) but starts as soon as I hit the button Error codes I received from the manual check were .... 15 - Which I assume is the Intake Air Temperature Sensor (No idea where that is, but could it be the cause of the popping and rough idle) 16 - Which says its Low Battery (Just installed a brand new fully charged unit, so could it be a dodgy earth?) 45 - Tells me that its a Kick Stand Sensor (pretty sure I can trace this, but could it be the cause of the occasional cut out on acceleration from stand still?) Any advice would be appreciated. I just want her back to normal now. Also worth mentioning is that she is stock standard and has absolutely no mods whatsoever. |

Forgot to add, she has slept outside ever since I have owned her ...... the bike that is, not the wife. Since I have started seeing the issues I have now moved her into the garage (again the bike). Gave her a bath on Saturday after which she started misbehaving (both wife and bike) |

IIRC the IAT sensor on an XB is inside the inner air box adjacent to your air filter the rough running could be the side stand switch , which if faulty will try to cut your ign. as it's to stop you riding off with the side stand down do you let your Buell idle for a few minutes, without revving it if you rev it , inside the first couple of minutes it will foul the spark plugs |

Actually ;0) ..... strangly enough both times its fouled I did blip the throttle gently, so will take that wise bit of advice and not do it again. As for the kickstand switch, is there anything I can do to clean it out without taking it off? |

You may find you end up melting it down and buy a 2001 X1... |

Could the sidestand switch just need adjusting slightly? are the ones on ddfi3 Xb's the same as on 1125's? if so not the same easily linked ones like on the earlier bikes. |

Ok have diconnected the side stand switch and the bike runs much better without it. Less popping on the backdraft. Have ordered the intake air temperature sensor, plug leads and the proper plugs (10r12x). Not entirely sure what the IAT sensor actually does or whet the symptoms are when it fails, does anyone know what happens when it fails? |

And check the easy and obvious first, as well: look at the earth points where the (-) battery lead is grounded to the frame. Clean it off, some have filed off the paint at the connecto=ion as well, and tighten back up good'n'tite. Some have also added a star washer in as well. My xb acted up something fierce when that ground shook loose. |

thanks guys, so in theory if the IAT sensor were faulty it would be fuelling incorerctly which could explain why she smells very rich, even when warmed up. In theory it may also be one of the contributory factors to why the first set of Iridiums I had (were in for 10 months without any issues) suddenly fouled. Another question for you. Since I diconnected the side stand sensor the engine light stays on. Anybody know what to bridge to turn it off? I would prefer to replace it but don't have the £90 + vat for a new one. I believe it is the magnetic kind (2008 XB12XT). |

The lambda sensor will ensure it is not running to rich. You could turn the side stand switch error checking off with ECMSpy. |

Hi Pash, does that apply for the DDI3 as well? I was told that it resets itself after every 4 cycles, which would mean that it would eventually return. Is that the case or does that only apply only to the actual running of th bike? |

That does exactly and only apply for DDFI-3. With an trouble code 16 thrown all other error codes are not worth to be examined in detail, before the battery voltage error is fixed. |
