I had an engine making a noise like that, swapped the crank (
and rob.bruce) and it went away. Looking at the naughty crank you wouldn't think it was guilty.Here is the crank pin from another of my engines, the rear went on this baby...

Still none the wiser about the engine noise. Went on you tube and found this video. The noise is exactly the same as mine. Thanks for your suggestions. Bike being total rebuilt at least now have got some idea were to look when I rebuild the engine. Starting to look for a supplier for the engine parts any suggestions ? |

You can only buy a crank from Buell (HD). I have seen the odd one on EBay, but based on my experience of the naughty crank in my 12 engine, I would steer clear cos the problem may not always be evident. Why not talk to Tubbs regarding the complete engine he has for sale? He is a good chap and wont be selling you rubbish... |

Or call Or Matt's Machine Shop Or Dark Horse Crankworks Problem I see with these cranks is that they are not flat nor machined on the inner faces of the webs, which makes pressing the pin out a little difficult (I am sure someone has a big thick piece of plate and a wide space on the press bed). You can press pin through both webs to free the top web then press it back out of the bottom web in the opposite direction however you end up making a mess of the inner surface of the hole on the lower of the two webs as any wear on the pin will score it as it is pushed through. Perhaps scoring is not an issue however it is interesting to see that some recovered cranks are welded together. Next job will be to find a new pin, if you need one. The likes of Jim's etc are not making them yet. Rods may be available for the 12 as they are the same length as Sportsters, but the 9 has a longer rod. I think Martinwill got away with just new rollers on his X1 when he had his crank rebuilt. Hopefully he will see this and tell you where his was done.
