Hi guys a couple of questions relating to the replacement of the lower rocker cover gasket. When removing the bolts securing the rockers i thought i'd check what they had been torqued at. I had expected them to be at 15-19ft lbs,but they were at around the 30 ft lb mark.What is the correct torque setting? The other problem is the rear offside bolt i believe has a special tool to remove it and more importantly refit because of it's restricted access,does anyone no of a way round this. Hope you can enlighten me,Ta Neil. |

Had you made sure that the engine was positioned correctly so that there was no pressure on the rockers  ............ if you're talking of the 1/2" bolt that you can't get a normal socket on i use a torque wrench that has an open ended spanner attachment that replaces the ratchet head.

Removal torque has no bearing on initial torque. 5/16 unc bolts x 4 are torqued to 18lbft 1/4 unc bolts x 3 are torqued to 12lbft 1/4 unc cap heads x 2 are torqued to 145lbins It is VERY important that the followers are on the back of the cams when rebuilding, otherwise you WILL bend valves, pushrods etc........DO NOT turn the engine for at least 1/2 hour after building in order to give the lifters chance to bleed down. To torque the rear RH bolt you will need a crowsfoot set at 90 degrees to your torque wrench. |

......and should you need any further help or advice, my phone is on 24/7 unlike Leeds H-D et al........I think that is what Jill was referring to and what cooter couldn't get his head around.......it's not always about the money

Thanks all for your comments and especially Maz for the info. I positioned the engine at TDC on compression stroke and hope as i believe this is correct as to not load up the valve gear! |
