I did a search re the above and there seem to be plenty of recommendations for fitting one of these to an XB. Is belt breakage a big problem with the standard set up then? I seem to recall the belt on the 1200's is a beefed up version of the one fitted to the 9 series in an attempt to resolve breakage problems. On a scale of 1 - 10 (one being don't waste your money to 10, you'd be an idiot not to get one) what do members think of the mod? Is it more esssential on a 9 than a 12? I'd appreciate your views and sorry if this has been done to death in the past but perhaps if it has it should be a sticky?

Also if you are laying your bike up for winter or an extended period, do you think it would be a good idea to relieve the tension on the drive belt by removing the tensioner?

In Germany are about 10k Buells registered, and broken belts are reported only rarely in the german forums, so in my oppinion it's not a common problem. Almost no one has the FS tensioner installed, I suppose the majority of those who have did it for optical reasons, same as the lighter secondary front sprocket (http://www.abload.de/img/2011-08-0615.07.00nu3n.jpg).

iirc it has more to do with relieving load on the output sprocket bearing than belt snapping.

Ah, I didn't realise it was more of a bearing saving device than the drive belt itself. The same question applies though, are they a 'must have' or just another bit of bling?

From what I've read on here - it's a MUST HAVE unless you want expensive bearing repairs.

Definately a must have not bling at all, they do look nicer than the original though. Also Maz grease nipple mod is a must.

Yes, it's a must-do, and no, you don't need to remove it if you lay the bike up.

Breather mod should be next, pop over & see Maz :maz: :yup:

If you're laying up the bike for extended periods, I tend to move belts around a bit so the same part isn't wrapped a pulley. On my 1198, during the winter, I stick it in top gear and turn the motor a bit, so it moves the cam belts too.

I've no idea if it helps the belts, but what harm can it do?

He has the Emporium based in Dukinfield, Manchester. You and your bike would benefit from a visit to Maz. If your travelling just call ahead and let him know your planning to pop in.
