.....I have an 01 M2 in the shop at the moment.......oil pump drive gear teeth all stripped off, cam gears all have missing teeth and the oil pump is scrap.
Cause of all this was a small piece of front cylinder exhaust valve spring that'd broken away and worked its way into the pumps scavenge rotors, thus locking the pump.
I have a cunning plan to insert a mesh screen into the scavenge drilling via the blanking plug in the sump, thus preventing such debris from making it into the pump.
I'm gonna spend tomorrow sorting a prototype and will trial it in the customers bike if he agrees to it........only concern is that it might reduce scavenge efficiency :?
Time will tell, watch this space :)

That is virtually an identical problem to what happened to Muffin ....can't remember which valve spring broke now ...................so i'd say go for it Maz

8-) ......and whilst you're sleeping on the option of stripping/cleaning the engine to remove any other resulting debris.......if the screen works, it would mean you could skip that option and keep your fingers crossed a little less tightly :?

How common a problem is this with the valve springs breaking up? Is there a need for them to be changed as a service item at a certain mileage? (Proactive rather than reactive)
:maz: “only concern is that it might reduce scavenge efficiency” depends on size of mess and how much debris it collects over time ( could just be a case of checking and clean at service intervals )

but sounds interesting idea and could save a whole load of grief should a spring or anything else fail
:yup:

Excellent idea Maz, something along the lines of a smaller version of oil tank filters fitted to old triumphs or fuel tap filters.

May I suggest you look also at sintered metal filters. I was looking at them to do some special filters for the Guzzi.

what happens when the filter blocks?

The engine wet sumps and hydraulics etc....... :)

Oddly enough, Ironhead sportsters had a mesh screen to stop debris getting back to the pump. It didn't feature with the Evo Sportsters.
That's progress for you.

After my recent concerns regarding oil pressure I had a look at the lubrication schematic in my S1 workshop manual yesterday. I was amazed that the position of the oil filter permits dirty engine oil to return to the tank via the scavenge side of the pump and then the dirty oil passes through the feed side of the pump again before flowing through the filter.
is it me or wouldn't it be better to have a filter on the return side just prior to entering the oil tank? If so maybe some enterprising person could come up with such a filter that is not too obtrusive?

There was a post on badweb where they did the return line filter but i cant find it. At the time i looked into the idea and was going to fit small inline filter available for turbo chargers similar to this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/All-New-In-Li ... 231576e559
but never got round to doing it.
Maz idea is better, prevents the crap from entering and causing damage to the pump, but how to without splitting and adapting the cases.
