Hi everyone.
I'm attempting a carb conversion on my 1999 X1.
I've installed a crane Hi-4 Dual Fire Ignition #8-1100 and the compatible rotor 32402-83. Problem is- when timing the bike there is no way i can adjust the ignition far enough to set the timing correctly- it's way out. I'm worried that i've bought the wrong ignition module or rotor. I notice in the fine print-"fits 1971 and up Sportster® (except XL 1200S)" (but the XL1200S is the 4 plug engine so i don't think that matters).

I think a solution might be to modify the rotor so i can rotate it further but i can't understand why i have to do that.

Second issue: I only went for dual fire 'cos i had just bought a new coil but now i see that Crane recommends I buy one of their coils for the correct resistance. The manual gives the OEM coil as having primary resistance of 0.5- 0.7 Ohms. Crane manual says- "Coils used
with the HI-4 must have at least 2 ohms primary resistance."
Crane also recommends spiral core wires and i'm not sure what kind the stock ones are. Will it run or do any harm to run with the OEM coil from FE bike? Thanks.

I've run a Mikuni on my X1 for a while, and although it runs very well , 15 miles to the gallon less has swung me back to FI, and once its set back up again it'll probably still have as good performance, and be better up mountains , although i havn't seen many round here.

15mpg less suggests a very rich carb or a very wrong ignition timing, you should be getting 60mpg on a run...

Its an average figure really, but carburation i'd say was spot on with nice chocolate colour plugs , no soot round the end of the can and no flat spots . Timing is retarded 2.5 degrees from stock. It was the kit Trojan Horse sell , where the ECM gets doctored.

I have a 99 X1 which runs the same carb conversion kit as yours , i had trouble setting the ignition as recommended in the kit . I ended up with a bad flat spot about 3000 to 3500 rpm , in the kit instructions it says to disconnect the throttle position sensor and set the timing manually but this means it does not Know when to advance or retard , so i have put a crane single fire ignition on with matching coils and leads plus a VOES switch from the carb to the ignition, the problem is now cured hope this helps.

I would love to have a play with an X1 with a Mikuni and an ECM:
