Is it possible to open the gear case on an xb9r-03 without first removing the cylinder head and hydraulic lifters as it say´s in the service manual.....need to have a little look

Yes. Rotate the engine down, remove the front rocker assembly and put the rear pot at TDC on compression stroke. |

pot=cylinder tdc=top dead centre so, yes

Both valves closed. Be VERY careful when you reassemble, if you bolt the rocker gear down too fast, you'll do some serious damage ie bend valves etc. Follow the manual instruction exactly

Yeah not just TDC but on the compression stroke so both rear valves are shut or you will have pressure on the cams when you try and remove the cover. |

You don't need a Compression tester, just stick a tie wrap or bit of copper wire down the plug hole a feel where the piston is. If you look at what the rockers are doing you can see when the followers are on the heel of the cam. |

A friend that´s pretty good at "jap-mechanics" recomends that I do a comp-test before starting dissasembly...is it just a waist of time trying too find someone who´ll lend me a comp-test or is this something I should see through before lower the engine? and here's the rest of the problem that´s been hounding me.... viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1596 viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1654 |

Sort of academic if the cam drive gears have failed ie. you will almost certainly have bent valves, broken guides, damaged pistons etc. |
