I am going to invest in some equipment to keep the old girl going......

What size is the rear axle nut (and front)?

Paddock Stand to buy? (or can I use a couple of axle stands and couple of iron bars?)

I would like your input before I f*** things up.....

Google 'stevesstainless', he does axle nuts for tubers.
Use a Micron stand and if you take the rubber cups off, you can use a long extension bar through the axle to make a bomb proof stand - as long as you don't want to remove the wheel

Rear = 1 7/16'' or 36mm
Front = 15/16'' or 24mm

........dont you have a verynear caliper ?

If you buy a cheap digital Vernier from Aldi/Lidl etc less than £10 (these are as accurate as my expensive one coz I checked with a Micrometer) just be careful as the battery runs down because some of them give 'funny' readings. Fortunately the readings are so far out, common sense will tell you it's wrong.

Just to be a pedant....and 'cos I don't know the answer....is it technically correct to call those digital jobbies, (and I have one....very useful too), 'vernier' callipers seeing as they don't have a vernier scale on them or should they just be callipers?

You are correct, which is why they are fondly referred to as 'verynears'...(also a nod of acceptance to the fact that they are obviously not as accurate as a micrometer)
But until no one refers to a ballpoint as a 'Biro' or a vacuum cleaner as a 'Hoover' everyone (bar the most awkward) will know what is meant by referring to them as verniers...

I bought two 60mm (x4) magnifying glasses for 99p each inc p+p off ebay last week, they turned up yesterday and are far better quality than I had expected. One now lives in my tool box. I bought them because I could not read the tiny text on an electrical component. I don't need glasses for normal reading yet, But the clock is ticking
