Post subject:  XB12X Colling Fan Removal

hi all,

The fan has given up the ghost on my Uly and I'm trying to remove but having problems.

I've suspended the bike off the ground, detached the shock and I've now got access to the fan. I've removed the 4 screws, but cannot get it out. I'm assuming that I just pull out from the bottom, which comes out approx 3/4", but then stops and I cannot move it any further.

Any tips?????????

Hi again,

Thanks for the tip, I did eventually get the manual open again, firefox wont let the clickable menu work. didn't think I would ever use IE again lol.

Got more probs though, so I thought I'd put some background in.

One a couple of days the fan started making horrible noises, like the bearings were going. Then I came out from work started bike up and the engine check light, after the four second then off, came on and stayed on. When I got home (on a v warm day) the fan did not come on when I stopped. Therefore I suspected the fan to be U/S.

I found a used fan on ebay, which I bought and the bearings checked out ok so looks like a good one. After the aforementioned problems with removing the old fan I have now fitted the 'new' one. Problem is the the check engine light still stays on and after leaving the bike running for approx 5-10 mins the fan does not come on.

Looking through the manual the light staying on relates to the current fault code?????? As stated above the light came on and stayed on but there were no flashes to indicate a specific fault code??

Thinking that the ECM may need resetting, I checked manual and can only find that it needs 50??? start and stop procedures and without ECMspy this is the only option I have.

Is there another way to reset the ECM?
Does anyone known what the issue may be???
Would the ECM stop the fan from running, if there was a fault detected and if so would the ECM reset fix this?

Probably your new fan is fubared also. (You did re-connect the fan, didn't you?) The easiest way to find out is to run an active test with EcmSpy. This will also allow you to fetch and clear the trouble codes.

Yeah worth checking your trouble codes, may not be fan related...
