Post subject:  Oil ouzing from filler when stick removed

Hi,

After leaving the bike for 5 months in the garage, I decided to spark it up yesterday but another duff battery was found, even on an Optimate (that's another story)

I put on my old HD battery and started it up & ran for 10 mins, then switched it off and let the oil settle before checking the level.
Now, when I removed the dipstick, about 100ml of oil oused out (all over my swinging arm & the new patio :-(

This I thought does not look good so I screwed the dipstick back in quickly and thought I'd post this thread to find out what the hell may have happened.

I was so looking forward to a ride out yesterday in the sunny weather for the first time this year!

Any ideas apart from I should ride it more often?

Cheers.

Too much oil in it to begin with?

No. When the bike was MOT'd in December, the oil level was checked and it was at mid-level then. No extra top-up was made at the time.

I'll remove the filler stick again this afternoon and report back.......(not on my patio)

Did you check the level when it was 'correct' straight after after running the bike or had it stood for a bit allowing the tank to drain into the crank cases?

Pash. It was checked originally in December after a warm up & left for 10-15 mins before checking the level.

I've just checked the level again and it's below half which must be the oil that came out yesterday. Nowhere near as high as yesterday's spillage!

This is very strange.

always check mine after a decent ride . pull up switch off , helmet and gloves off, check oil level .
in the old days the only other thing that could increase oil levels , was petrol ?
if it was carb , fuel left switched on , faulty needle valve, causing it to flood and drain into engine

Thanks Barney.

I've decided to give it an oil change & new filter. That way if a foreign object ends up in the oil pan or any tell tale bits of metal are present, then it may be a more serious issue that will need sorting. £££'s :(

Fingers crossed.

I'll keep you posted.

I always check mine straight after turning the bike off and whilst its on its side stand as it says in the handbook, I also find that my Uly doesn't use that much oil either.

In my X1 manual it says to "Position motorcycle STRAIGHT UP and completely level".

I overfilled mine a bit after putting the motor back together, and it found it´s own level after a while. lOl
The bike marked its territory like the dog it is. ;)
