A quick question.. is there any reason I can't press out the stem from the lower tree, to push the lower bearing off with it?

We have a 50 ton press at work, so it should push it out and back together easily.

I'm assuming this is what I'd have to do anyway, when I can afford some of Spondon's lovely billet jobbies.

Tried the heat trick tonight, but it isn't moving.

My blowtorch isn't so good at localising the heat, so I think I'm heating the stem as much as the inner race. :roll:

Why are they called triple trees?

If you push the stem/steerer out, you need to be careful to get it back in the same orientation otherwise your steering lock (the one with the key) won't be the same as it was.

Riders of Bridgwater used to have a fantastic (Wurth I think it was) that was a hinged split tube with a number of forms to fit over exposed Timken inner races or deep groove inner races. Not seen one since that one in 1988.

You can notch the race with a Dremel then hit it with a chisel to split.

No idea why they call them triple trees to be honest. I always called them yokes.
I guess it's another Americanism.

I'll try the chisel rick first. Thanks for the tip :yup:

Never had any problems removing the inner race once the cage and rollers are binned ie. just drift it off with a blunt chisel :)
As Pash sez, you could remove the stem but orientation needs to be spot on for the steering lock.

I'll give it a go at work tomorrow. I don't have a decent vice and workbench at home, but I do at work :)

If I do push it out, I´ll make sure I mark it first. It could do with a good clean up on the wire wheel to be honest.

I´ll have a word with the Wurth Guy about the tool you mention Pash, when he pops into the workshop. I assume it works with a puller. Not that I really need one, but I love buying tools! lOl

A good tip when splitting a bearing using this method is that after grinding as far through as possible is to wrap tape around the bearing before using the chisel to split it, this will contain any sharp bearing splinters that may fly off burying themselves into your face or body ;) ..............it does happen and has done more than once at our work so that wrapping the bearing is now written into our work SSW's ;)

Had to have metal splinter removed from arm many years ago, but think this might have been mushroomed chisel head
