Hi guys I'm new to the buell scene (awesome by the way) anyway 3 weeks ago I purchased a 05 xb9 lightening, it has loads of aftermarket kit on including a race ecm and right hand scoop to help cool the rear cylinder. my bro owns a ully and an lightening both 12s, his fan nearly always comes in when he turns the bike off, however I have never heard mine once, I have checked the fuse an put power directly to the fan which spools up fine, can anyone tell me if my thermostat, ecm is broke or she's just staying cool due to the scoop? Any help would be massively appreciated . Thanks ed |

You can test it with ECMSpy |

Probably its staying cool because of the right scoop ,or you not riding it long enough! |

Just FYI, if the right-hand scoop is made by Buell, it is not designed to help cool the rear cylinder. That's what the factory left-side scoop does. The right scoop was designed to "get better airflow over the fuel rail when the fan is on (at low speed)". This is per Abe Askenazi, who was the Director of Analysis, Test, and Engineering Process at Buell. The race ECMs I have used have different fan activation characteristics than stock. On your next ride, try and tell if the fan comes on while driving. And if you don't think it is ever turning on, give it a test as pash said with ECMSpy for Mono, or Tunerpro. |

Thanks guy's I've only owned the bike a month I was told the right hand scoop was to cool the rear cylinder by another bueller , now I know I will check it out, does anybody know how much damage riding without the fan would cause as the bike has 26k on and I don't know how long it might have not been working? |

No worries on the scoop. For all I know, the Buell engineer was using the term "scoop" and "shroud" interchangeably There is a complete diagnostic flowchart in the service manual for the fan and ET sensor that will pinpoint the problem, if there even is one. You have already checked the fan fuse and directly applied power to the fan, and it spooled up, so you could focus on the engine management portion of the system. Since you have purchased a used motorcycle, you may not be certain if the previous owner has altered any fan settings in the ECM. All of that and more can be checked, as pash mentioned, with ECMSpy (or Tunerpro or ECMDroid) and a data link cable. Issuing a "fan test" command with ECMSpy will tell you a lot. As brother in buells said, it could just be running cooler. But if the check engine light ever blinks, then the engine is already overheated. It is not automatically catastrophic, but it would likely reduce the life expectancy of the oil and could result in engine damage. Until you figure this out, avoid idling for long periods of time. |

to And you could take the scoop off and take it for a spin to see if the fan kicks in. |

You live in the middle of Wales? Has it been hot yet there this year? The fan on my uly has only been on once whilst I've been riding it this year - although it does come on when I switch the engine off. Temperature has been too cold. |
