Post subject:  XB1200 Cooling Fan

A few months ago I posted on here about my 07 XB1200 cooling fan never going off once it came on. It was tested by the dealer who said it was fine (which meant it came on and went off at the correct temeperature), however this means that once the bike gets to 428F it never gets down below 356F for the fan to go off.

Talking to others this is unusual as it seems most peoples fans go off once they get on open roads and only come on when in traffic and around town.

There are no fault codes or evidence of engine overheating.

The dealer once again tested the fan hooked up to their diagnostics with me present and it was noted that the fan came on once the engine temperature registered 428F but when it did the temperature reading lept 30 odd degrees to about 458F, which means the engine temperature would need to drop over 100F for the fan to stop, which probably explains why it doesn't.

The dealer is going to check another bike to see if that inexplicably jumps 30 degrees when the fan comes on, to see if 'they all do that sir'. Just wondered if anyone else had any experience of this?

ETS has been changed. I changed it when I wasn't happy about the fan, so don't know if it 'jumped' with the old sensor.

Sorta related, my xb9 fan came on most the time with 4000miles on the clock and more so on the open road due to giving it some etc.
It was so annoying I removed the standard right hand scoop and nticed immediatly the fan ran less.
The next significant change came when I put a good quality 20-50 engine oil in to replace the dealer shite in it.

My bike was an 06 and it felt tight when I got it, after loosening it up and letting some heat out the fan issue was much better.

Belper, are you any nearer a solution yet...??

I've just gotten an 07 Ulysessessessess, with 2000 miles now on clock...the fan is on pretty much constant, unless i ride it like my gran from the onset...if at any point i give it the beans..fan is on then stays on....even this morn on my 6am 25 mile commute with no traffic...

Looking at what Nate is saying ..my oil does look like urineuswaterius...NATE did the oil change make a huge difference ??

Yes it does, me and others swear by it, I have many experiances with it to comfirm it.

Your young engine is still tight though and it will be getting hot any way.

Asda. Change the oil and filter every 2.5k. I use Torco V-Series ST-MPZ myself but Morris is good as well. Stick to the same brand whatever you use.

For me the engine was still a bit tight at 4k but was right, IMO, at 6k. Now at 11k the fan only starts up, on a ride, if I ride it hard and that is with an ambient air temp of 23C.

You will find a free flowing can makes a hell of a diff, as it gets the hot gas away much better than the OEM can, as does (as sitting on the bike) an aftermarket R/H air scoop. You will also find, with all of this, that the hot bike thing goes away. My bike is just about the same as any other now.

I think the engine needs a little "old style running-in" to get the best from it in the long run. The engine, like the BMW flat twin and the Guzzie twin, is an old air-cooled design and should not be treated like a modern wet motor.

Giving any of these motors "big beans" before they are well run-in is asking for trouble, IMO.

Morris Oil is top notch stuff. If you download the spec sheet on their 20/50 V Twin oil, you'll find it's exactly the same spec as their XHD Ring Free diesel oil. When I questioned one of their tech folk about this he agreed the bike stuff is just repackaged (and they put the price up ;) )

Shame, I've been using the cheapo HD stuff in my 06 CityX since new and 17600 miles now.. :roll:

Was run in like an oldie, and always treated with respect, but will she appreciate a change of brand now? :?

There's nowt wrong with the HD stuff either (rumour has it that it's made by Royal Purple :? ) I just use the Morris stuff because it easily available and it's a 120 mile round trip to my nearest decent Dealer. The last time I tried to buy some form the HD place in Chester, they didn't have any in stock for sale but were willing to change the oil for me at the usual huge cost a Dealer charges :roll: :tosser:

Jeepers! The dealers round here seem pretty good compared to other parts of old Blighty! Or was the infamous seasonal oil shortage a couple of years ago part of the same scam? :roll:

but never heard of Royal Purple lubricants.....sounds like a sex aid, sure it wasn't Purple Royals? :lol:

I don't think that Royal Purple are one of the major players globally but HD are in a position to buy their oil cheaply and make an acceptable profit from it. I'm sure they don't give a flying fuck whether it's a 'good' oil or not - although it seems as good as anything else :?

Well got the bike back from the dealer and they 'can confirm there is nothing wrong with it

They also tested their demo bike and the temperature jumped 30deg on that too once the fan came on.

My question now is why would it do this, it's either a fault or the system is programmed to do this?

Does anyone have wiring diagrams as I'd like to know what is wired with the fan, could it be a poor earth connection which is affecting the impedence of the temperature sensor?

I might direct this question to HDUK too, why does the temperature jump 30deg when the fan kicks in?
