This is probably a silly question but my electrics are not the best. I cant seem to earth the x1 after rebuilding it. Have all the frame earths cleaned and one on swingarm but the only way I seem to be able to get an earth is to front mount or a head bolt. Am i missing something?

Have loom earthed to top left of frame above battery and negative coming to battery from back left on frame , then the earth strap goes to swingarm from bottom right?

Thanks, David

Have you painted/coated the frame? Ensure that the earth rings have good metal to metal contact...
The frame, the motor/swingarm block and the battery negative terminal must all be connected well (electrically speaking).
Disconnect the positive lead at the battery and then test for resistance across the earthing points ie
i) battery negative lead to battery negative terminal
ii) battery negative lead to motor (bare metal eg head bolt)
iii) battery negative lead to frame (bare metal)
One of these will show a high resistance and lead you to the problem.

Swingarm is my problem so, all was powdercoated, i suppose im getting no transfer from frame/engine to swingarm ? although earth strap should be doing that no?

Earth strap goes to swing arm block, and from new the motor and swing arm block would've been considered as one (electrically), so an earth connection to the block would also earth the motor. Sounds like you've effectively insulated the swingarm block from the motor lOl
Either run another earth strap to the motor (from either the swing arm block or the battery negative terminal... both a bit messy but a temporary jump lead would at least confirm your theory) or establish a good electrical pathway from block to motor (eg scrape off the paint under one or more of the four connecting stud washers)

Powdercoat had seperated the swingarm block and engine so I wasn't getting an earth. Got it running today for first time in 3 years :-)

Keep tightening those fasteners because as the powder relaxes/gets displaced they will loosen......never, ever coat either a machined face of a fastener seat

The bike was so bad I never even realised it was a machined face on that swingarm block .the engine side was not painted just the block ,will keep an eye on fasteners tho

Bloody Hell Dave. That first photo looks quite horrendous. Photo's two and three look MUCH better. It's just knowing the earthing paths that need thinking about. Looking good. :yup:
