Post subject: | Maz - X1 Engine blown |
Hi, my first post and its a good un. I have a 2000 model year X1 Lighning owned from new, bike has been well looked after and apart from Vance and Hines pipe is standard. 17000 miles. The engine has just blown, ironically just after MOT. After investigating I removed front head to find exhaust valve snapped off and through top of piston. Obvious damage is as follows, piston u/s, cylinder head has impact damage from where valve bounced around, both pushrods bent, missing piece of piston is somewhere. Barrel is OK, head may be repairable (subject to pressure test). The engine needs to be stripped to examine valve train and clean etc. Thoughts, costs to rebuild by yourself, or good source of parts would be appreciated. |

Engine on two previous runs had occasionally made a small chuffing noise but had cleared quite quickly, I wasn't sure at the time if it was engine or something loose, engine let go with a bang whilst accelerating, although I was in traffic so I wasn't pushing. The exhaust valves have been superseeded by Harley, so I assume that the stem stretched causing the valve not to seat a few times until it eventually gave way and dropped into the bore. The chuffing noise was I think blow by past the valve as it didn,t seat. No drop in performance noted. |

![]() Curiously a chuffing noise appeared a couple of times shortly before the big end let go on my 2000 M2. The loss of clearance had the front piston wacking the head, breaking a chunk off the skirt. In any case it’s also likely that the oil pump is toast along with replacement or thorough cleaning of the oil lines and oil tank. |

So sorry to hear of your trouble - but is this yet another 2000MY tuber engine letting go ![]() Am I right to think that they changed on the 2000MY to a pressed up crank - if so could they have had a production issue with it at that time? |
