Hi all, I have had a Buell 2007 XB12X for about 7 years but haven’t used it a lot and I am now feeling rather foolish. (Especially as this is a first post)! I haven’t ridden the Buell for a while and the battery was flat so I took it off the bike and charged it. When I refitted it I fitted it the wrong way round! Been round cars, bikes and lorries 40 plus years, and should know better, but brain in neutral and…..well the outcome is a very dead bike. Has anyone any experience of similar occurence’s? I assume the ECM will be burnt out and I guess isn’t repairable? Will I have damaged other components as well? After returning to the house in shame, I did briefly look on ebay for an ECM, but there don’t appear to be any of the correct type. Can anyone point me towards a replacement? Despite the above I am reasonably competent with a multimeter. |

I've got an ECM I'll sell you but first you need to check if it's bust. IIRC the fan is likely to die from an incorrectly fitted battery... I'm guessing it was a motobatt... |

The big question is, what works and what doesn't when you turn the key? What happens when you press the starter button? |

Usually just relays that are damaged. |

Thanks for the responses. Yes, it is a motobatt. 4 terminals instead of 2. Easily done if you aren't concentrating. Nothing worked when I first tried but some fuses had blown and I couldn't find enough fuses of the right size to substitute. I have collected some more today. Hopefully I can have another go tonight. I assume the suspect relays are the ones in the fuse box? If that is the case I will take them out the bike and check these with a meter. Once the relays are proven good, or replaced, I can tackle the fuses. Pull them all out initially and then try replacing one at a time and see what circuits I have at the end of it. I will heave a big sigh of relief if the only damage is relays, but that was the purpose of asking the question. |

Don't worry, I did exactly the same thing with the same replacement battery! From memory it will be one of the relays, but your fi light will then be on even when fixed...I think someone said after a few start ups this rights itself? I seem to remember the only thing that worked was the fan was on continuously? I put a thread up a few years ago. |

I believe on the 1125's it can also toast the fuel pump so maybe possible on Xb's as well. |

I am extremely pleased to say it is all up and running again with no obvious defects, although I haven't taken it for a run on the road yet. I pulled the relays out one by one and tested them on a battery. Two of them, the ignition and start relay gave a big flash as I connected them to the battery, but then operated okay, and didn't flash a second time when reconnected. (I checked on the bike which was the live side of the relay first, just in case they were polarity sensitive). Two fuses had blown, the ECM and the key switch fuse. I replaced those, reconnected the ECM and then turned the key. Hey presto, the dash did its self check, so I went on to press the starer button and it sprang back into life. No warning lights on, dash appears to be correct with the correct mileage etc. Gone through the lights, horn etc and its all working. My relief is immeasurable and the lesson learnt unforgettable. Thanks to all that have shown an interest and helped me. A few pointers in the right direction was very gratefully received. James. |
