Probably a silly question...but here goes. Brought bike (XB12XT with just over 5k miles) for a 15 minute spin then came home and dropped engine oil (then put on rear bike stand with front wheel up on a block) and drained tranny oil. This is my third time to drop the engine oil and second time to drop the tranny oil - its was also done by HD Waterford at 1000 miles. My first time to inspect the Primary chain. New oil filter fitted, new o-rings on both drain bolts fitted and added required amount of engine oil and tranny oil (wiped drips off exhaust !!). Checked and adjusted the little adjusting screw, replaced clutch inspection cover with new gasket. Removed the little primary chain inspection cover and checked chain - doesnt seem too bad but want to check it in a few positions.....the service manual and owners guide mentions "rotating the engine" - now is there an easy way to do this ??? Only other mention of rotating engine in service manual is using a jack and opening/closing header nuts etc etc. On my old Honda CX's there is access to the 17mm crank nut via an inspection port to turn over the engine........probably asking too much here ??? Pushing the bike in neutral doesnt move the primary chain !! Pushing the bike in gear is quite difficult - (very in fact - even in high gear)!! Can I start and ride the bike forward half a yard with the inspection cover off ?? do this a couple of times to check the primary chain tension ? or is there a smarter way ?? Thanks. Eric. |

I put mine on a paddock stand in 5th gear, plugs out and turn the rear wheel |

Yeah, without going near the plugs it was just too much compression for me - and as the bike only has just over 5k miles I'm not replacing them yet. I've just been out and ran the bike with the inspection cover off to move it on a little - just a drip of oil came out . So rode it on 18 inches or so twice and checked it both times (turned off)- tension/movement within "cold" figures so all good ! Thanks. Eric. |

I put mine on paddock Stand and 5th gear then just turn back wheel, slowly when you reach compression, works ok for me. do it during winter time to rotate engine |
