Hi Folks, Buy these at your own risk, Guru Maz says no no & science is on his side. See thread. I'm a just a total C**t at times, but with years of experience using these without one single failure so I reckon they are fine. £2 to club funds & I'll send them free as a further donation. I have 3 sets. All the best

I have toyed with all things stainless but have been told never to use them on points of stress,I have had my eyes on the bracket that holds the Caliper,but keep thinking to have them plated.i changed everything to stainless that I can get to.i work with stainless a lot and it is a pretty brittle metal. |

I'd be very wary of home plating. I've seen the primary case bolts on a Jap il4 pop off when only just nipped up. I was told that it was due to hydrogen embittlement during the plating process. For critical fasteners, I use high tensile steel and paint the heads. When I asked a fastener company about their S/Steel caliper bolts they were selling for Brembo Monoblock calipers, they told me that they used a specific (and refused to say what) grade of SS. The difficulty was finding one that was good in shear and would accept rolled threads nicely. |

Yeah thanks Adam, I am indeed wary of home plating but it looks easy enough so I'll give it a try, if it doesn't work I'll try something else, I have some really nice exhaust paint that I ain't gonna use on my silencer now, may try baking that on as it's only for looks really. May even just make some caps that fit in the socket heads & cover them, if successful I will of course post pics & give club members a chance to have some. Yeah I have an idea why they wouldn't tell you what "special" grade stainless it was & told you about rolling threads & shear. Distraction! I'm surprised you put up with that kind of waffle. As I've already mentioned, shearing isn't the problem with caliper bolts it's "creep", I find it interesting they didn't mention that to you? All the best Paul. |

Oh right, that only once, Yeah I was hoping I'd only have to do it once, wish me luck with the finish heh heh. Just kiddin' Finmows, I get the advice re hydrogen embittlement during the plating process, I'll bear it in mind. More likely to paint them as it's shitloads easier, just fancied trying nickel plating as I haven't tried it & knew if I mentioned the Rotor bolts someone would come in. Little bit busier on here now isn't it? As the Hoff would say, "I Like it". |

Hey Folks, Look at this if you're worried about stainless bolts in your front caliper. https://www.joesracing.com/rt-4172-mast ... -math.html I'm not a scientist but seems to me the pressure generated inside the front brake caliper does't even exceed one stainless bolt never mind 4 of the F*****r's. Suppose that's why I've never had any signs of "creep" over the past twenty years. But hey, I may have read it wrong. "WAIT" Just before you start going on about lateral pressure etc, let me just remind you that your fork bottoms are cast alloy, & hence the threads that are in them are too (Cast alloy is itself extremely brittle) & far more likely to fail than any stainless bolts which are bolted into them. So perhaps rather than looking at the tensile strength of Stainless bolts we should be looking at the tensile strength of cast alloy threads? Maybe I got this stainless thing all wrong & should try Cast alloy bolts? Have a nice day. |
