Decided to give the bike a pair of new tyres, problem, front wheel removal, manual says to remove pads from front calliper to allow clearance. I cannot get the " centre calliper bolt" out easily and I would prefer to work on it later removed. Question is can I remove the disc bobbins to gain sufficient clearance instead? Thanks.

do you mean this bit ?

I had one seized in the caliper on my X1 ,i used a dremmell with a small cutting disc , to cut the centre
portion of the pin out (but leave enough to get a grip on it in the middle part ) so i could then remove the pads , then remove the caliper to free out the rest of the pin.

Do what nutah says. Though locate a new pin first. Then remove the pads wheel/disc and then drown the bastard in DW40 and remove the offending item.
