Post subject: | Boiled battery issue |
Hi all I had an issue with my xb12x which I'm trying to diagnose the cause of. I ride the bike about 40 miles or so, parked up for an hour, came back to it and all it did when I pressed the starter button was a series of rapid clicks. I lifted the seat to find the battery very warm and swollen and it was sitting surrounded by white powder! Had to call Recovery. Once home I cleaned it up and couldn't see any leak from the sealed gel type battery. It charges up on the bench and passes load test to 400cca. So it appears ok. The bike still clicked on pressing starter button. I cleaned up the battery connectors and frame earth point and it starts up and runs fine in situ. However I notice that the voltage across the battery is 14.6 volts constant when the motor is running. Ie it does not drop or even vary when the motor is revved. Given that battery is apparently in good condition charge wise, I would have expected the charging voltage to drop so I'm wondering if it's overcharging the battery and boiling it. The manuals cover voltage regulator failures usually in cases of under charging. There doesn't seem to be much about overcharging. Has anyone had similar experience or can offer advice as to likely cause? I need to sell the bike unfortunately but don't want to do so if there is a problem lurking even though it does run fine. Thanks Andy |

![]() does sound like overcharging TBH have you checked your connections coming out of the generator as that plug can be faulty they are a deutsch connector they can be rebuilt , 77 connector can be a fault on the XB Buells.. also look at this ...viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1770&p=286184&hilit=type+77+connector#p286184 |

Thanks Nutah. I've read about this connector's weakness and thought that might account for LOW or zero volts charge rather than too much charge. I'll have a look at it though and hopefully it might be something simple and cheap like that. Many thanks Andy |

good luck Andy always start with the simple /cheaper fix first ![]() |

When my stator was broken, I saw almost every voltage from zero to 20 volts. It seems to me, that the VR expects three nicely arranged sine waves and is running amok otherwise. As a side note: you could reconfigure the ECM to throw a voltage error earlier than the default (which is 19 volts IIRC). |

Thanks for advice. Will test the outputs etc and hopefully find what's amiss. Cheers Andy. ![]() |
