I am fed up of random bits of pipe and jars for bleeding and refilling brakes etc.

I have a garage compressor and have been looking at the Sealey VS020 as a simple unit. Available around £20.

Anyone any experience of this sort of unit or have any other recommendations for something similar for a home mechanic?

I have the Snap-On version of that and it works perfectly.....bit more than 20 quid though !
.....you'll need at least 8 CFM from your compressor though :)

Whenever I have used them they suck air around the bleed nipple threads and one thinks there is air in the system and one continues until they run out of fluid :?

Yep, my experience too, especially on very old bikes.

Muppetry I can do, but it's bad enough with open pots of brake fluid, I certainly don't want brake fluid spray in the garage :o

I just use an old syringe (no i didn't get it from a druggie) draws enough vacuum
good enough for home mechanic use.

Exactly....looked an old donkey of a car but perilously close to spraying a fine mist of brake fluid over the wing....a controlled syringe vacuum seems better then the old fluid can be squirted straight down the drain 🤣.......just kidding...
