Hi All, I discovered recently that the exhaust flange at the top of the header that goes into the engine had become loose... Discovered that the bolt had either come off or someone took an interest in them... But I think it may have just come unscrewed over time. I've replaced both bolts on them, but I'm still getting blow from it (not as much as when it was loose). I presume it may need a new Exhaust port gasket and a flange retaining clip... I'm not a mechanic, so correct me if I'm wrong... Would I need to remove the whole header to replace these, or can I somehow just loosen that part and slip it in? I've looked online at removing the headers and it looks like a big, expensive job. Any help will be much appreciated. Many thanks, Dan. |

Sounds like it's the retaining ring that's corroded and failed. For a XB, it's an engine rotation job for removal of headers to fit new gaskets and retaining rings. Care needed with removal of other header nuts too to ensure you don't snap the studs. Parts wise, it's not expensive but can be a pita. If you're equipped and competent in the garage, give it a go, else seek out the expertise of

Thanks for the advice! Unfortunately, I'm not confident enough or well equipped to do a job like that. Sorry if this has been answered, but is there anywhere near Horsham/Surrey that is a Buell specialist that you would recommend? Somewhere that isn't 2.5+ hours away. Do you have a van? Your best bet is to make the trip up to South Manchester. You'll get the best work in record time (he works fast). The Emporium rate is £40, compare this with Mauldens rate and you'll be well ahead. It'll make the extra few hours drive worth while. If you ask Maz nicely he may be able to do the job while you wait, save the double journey. You'll learn a lot abut your steed too. He has tea and biscuits and prefers it if you leave the teaspoon in the sugar pot  If you don't have a van, Enterprise is good as they have unlimited mileage. I live near you and have made this journey (2 wheeled and 4) for a few years now, it is worth the drive. |
