Just wondering if anyone has used a lithium ion battery with any success :?:

Yep, they're ok, but you need to let them warm up a bit, before hitting the starter button.

Looking at the weight that's possible to save, I've also lost over 17lbs whilst in lockdown

If you can start the bike in rollers or using a remote starter, you could remove the starter and charging system including the rotor and run a tiny 12v battery = massive weight saving

The only problem I'd have doing that is that I'd need another person with me all the time, and unfortunately I'm Billy no mates 99.9% of the time :sad1:

I run a Shorai in my X1. LFX27L3-BS12 instead of the standard LFX24.... Higher CCA simply because I have a higher compression engine than stock and a slightly higher kw starter. They're both the same size and weight so why not get the more powerful one? Other than cost?

As was stated, they need a few seconds with the ignition turned on to get the molecules flowing, then hit start. In the winter, you need a little more time before starting. The headlight will draw some current to get the battery moving. Give it 20-30 seconds, then hit the button. It rarely gets below 40F where I live, so this isn't an issue for me and I think 40F is where the battery starts becoming sluggish. This is probably why these kinds of batteries are able to hold a charge for so long when being stored away.

When I used to race the heavyweight sportsman (X1) and Sporty classes (and land speed in the autumn), I used to run "total loss" as Maz described. They were just 8 lap sprints (and 5 mile runs), so running out of juice wasn't much of an issue. I never considered trying a smaller, lighter battery then as I just didn't know how low I could go and still make it back to the pits. Having a LiPo battery would've been great as it is easier than me losing 8 or 9 pounds.

Well I bit the bullet and got a battery and charger pack from Bike torque racing in Somerset, it has a 3 year guarantee as long as you register it and use the correct charger.
Lead acid weighed in at 5.8kg the lithium was 1.4 and spins the engine faster than I've ever seen.
Bought it yesterday fitted today....very pleased 8-)

The quickest and easiest way to lose 4.4 kg while still eating whatever you want.

Two hundred and forty three pounds to that man with the funny haircut ;)
But tbh I've spent that on illicit substances in the past :oooops:
Hopefully the investment will be worth it 🤞
