Post subject: | X1 intermittant cutting out |
Greetings, My X1 keeps cutting out whilst on the move, clearly a loss of ignition system as i can just switch ignition off and on and it picks up again...until the next time. If often does it at junctions. Irritating. Initially i thought it may be neutral or sidestand or clutch switches but all appear to be ok. Im going to go through all junctions , fuses , relays, earths and kill switch but wondered if anyone has had this before, or if its a common thing? Runs perfectly other than this. Thanks! |

A dodgy relay maybe, I had that once. I presume you have shorted out the sidestand and clutch switches, they might appear ok but not staying "made" all the time |

by pass the switches they are notorious for causing problems check the bank switch too |

Nutah wrote: :yt: by pass the switches they are notorious for causing problems check the bank switch too The first X1 demonstrator l rode from Motex near Worcester (who closed there years ago) kept missing or hesitating when banking through roundabouts. I kept thinking it would stop and tip me off while l was leaning, but it never quite stopped. I was new to Buells then and was more used to a friends 900 Monster which had next to no flywheel inertia by comparison. The dealer admitted to having problems with the X1, but could not fathom the fault. They had even Gerry rigged a wire running from under the seat along the frame towards the front of the bike. Strange that they would let people actually ride it then. Much later when l had heard of such a thing, l thought ‘bank switch’? Would that create the effect of nearly cutting out while banking, given that it seemed fine when pushing on upright? And why didn’t the dealer sort it quickly on an almost new bike? |

Greetings, firstly thanks for all the comments. I have removed the sidestand switch and bridged the wiring. To my understanding this should provide a permanent earth to the ignition so that it doesn’t matter what state the clutch lever or gearbox are in. The problem persists. I can start it and it will sit and idle for a while, then randomly stop. I then either switch off and on and it will happily restart, or remove n replace ignition relay and again it will restart. But then after a random period of time it will stop again. I swapped starter and ignition relay, no difference. Those and the fuses are all in good shape with dielectric grease on. I notice that the ignition switch is getting quite warm around the back, which doesn’t seem right. I guess the next thing is to investigate the bank switch and deeper into the wiring. Can anyone point me to a wiring diagram? I have a service manual but its a poor photocopy and the wiring diagram is unreadable. Thanks. |

I did have an ignition switch internally melt , that caused a misfire by pass the switch , see if that cures it , new from HD was about £90 custom chrome £30...from memory You have a pm clanger1 |

Thanks Nutah, i think thats a good idea, i cant think of any good reason why it should run warm. |

Also ive just noticed the X1 manual sticky. Although the wiring diagrams in there are pretty hard to read also. |

You can check if the bank angle sensor is at fault by just unplugging it , an X1 will run without it connected but it will put the engine warning light on. |

That’s useful to know, thanks. It’ll be a couple of weeks before i get back to it, but I’ll report back on the next chapter.. |

Check the wires going to the coil, they've been known to break inside right next to the terminal it did on mine took ages to figure it out |
