riding along the other day, and the engine warning light comes on. pull over, and switch the bike off. leave it for 5mins, switch the ignition back on, and no light - GREAT :) but now when i try to start it, i get a loud clicking, and the dials sweep left to right and back again, as per the startup routine, the clock and trip info reset, and the bike wont start. the recovery dude jump starts me, and says the alternator is knackered. is there a way i can verify this, and rule out and shorts or cabling issues?

Quick and dirty method. Get a volt meter and check the battery: 12V plus. If not charge.

With a charged battery, start the bike. Tick over ~12.8V or slightly more Rev to 2K rpm ~ 14.8V Drop to tick over ~12.8+V

If that all checks out there's nothing much wrong with the alternator.

Borrow a "clip on" ammeter, clamp it round the positive battery lead, with the bike running, It will either show a charge +, or a discharge -. If it shows a charge your problem is elsewhere. If it shows discharge then you have Alternator, Regulator or wiring problems......................simple :yup:

Check the connector located near the drive pully for damage or dirty/loose connections ;)

It will need to have DC capability, Auto electricians use them for this and other electrical trouble shooting.

the garage have advised that they think its the voltage regulator that sits between the alternator and the battery thats faulty. apparently they either start giving too much charge and blow the fuses and headlights, or too little. apparently the latter with mine. that said, the regulator seems to be cheaper than a replacement alternator, and far easier to get to to swap. will keep you posted if this solves it. have been thinking of buying the ecmspy software and lead and using that. can you use this to interrogate the error codes? other sites suggest you can use the taco display to view the error codes? does ecmspy offer much more functionality?

Err, just a bit. Try and find someone near you who has it and knows how to work it. An amazing bit of kit.

TFD - not saying this is definitely the problem but it costs nothing but a bit of time to eliminate. I have seen this on many '06 & '07 Ulys and a couple of other earlier XB's.

Rectification ranges from a clean and tighten to complete plug replacement depending on your luck on the day.

Gunter has a detailed post in the 'How To' section on the replacement.
